You should be fine as long as its a good kennel.

It has to be a good kennel. some places just let the pup eat, poop and sleep with no play time or personnal interaction. Make sure you know what your getting.

Heck I destroyed my arm when Chloe was 6 months old and she went to the trainer then and stayed. By the time I was able to have her at home again, he was breaking her. Your puppy will be fine!

Left ours in a kennel once. Ten years ago and she is still mad about it. It wasn't a very good kennel.

+1 Sometimes it is better for their health to be confined.

Always visit the kennel first and check out the situation. I took mine to a kennel once. Turned out dogs were kept in the basement, in the dark ,in a small pen. WE didn't leave the dog.
Most kennels require a canine cough shot at least 3 months before boarding.

I went through this this passed Spring. I needed to board my 18 mth Brittany while we were away on vacation. I visited a commercial boarding Kennel and yes they had an excellent facility with fenced in play area and quality kennels, every single thing they did for your dog had a price tag on it. They billed you extra for play time outside. I ended up sending him to a professional trainer for the 2 weeks and it's the best money I ever spent on him. He learned tons from the trainer and got to work live birds steady for 2 weeks. Anytime we have to board him the dog is going straight back to this trainer. My pup was even starting to "back" onother dog which is something I never had an oppurtunity to work on while traing by my self. Find a good trainer and you will be the better for it.

That's great advice terrym. My dog is being trained at a trainer's kennel right now and if I ever have to board her for vacation I'm going back there even though it's a 2 hr drive. They work them every day except Sunday's so she's learning and having fun and getting attention. My city Vet is a great vet but she doesn't get the whole hunting dog thing.

My dog's not spoiled ... I'm just well trained

I run a small kennel, well it's more of a doggie B&B then a kennel. Best advice I can give you is to get your pup used to being without you! The best dogs I take care of began being away from home when they were young. They learn to deal with it and don't get all depressed and panicky! They adapt easier and aren't all stressed.
The worst dogs are those whose owners get all upset and stressed about leaving them. Their concerns and excitement run right down that leash to the dog! These are usually the dogs who won't eat, poop all over, sit in a corner and shiver. We hate them!!!!!

If you do take your pooch to a kennel, stay calm, hand him over and leave without a bunch of tears and drama. Don't ask to walk to his run, don't sit by his gate and tell him over and over and over..... We'll be back. All he hears is the panic in your voice and then he gets upset. Trust the people you leave him with.... and find people you can trust.

What happened? And can we avoid it if we have to kennel?
