Where is the best city to live for bird hunting, hands down?
If you could pick one city for great bird hunting, where would it be?
Where would the best city be for great bird hunting, great family life, shopping, movie theaters, ect. All the great benefits of a city, with bird hunting near by? Fishing spots would not hurt either

Hands down I don't know, two that are going to have world class bird hunting and world class fishing within 20 minutes would be Aberdeen SD, and Devil lake ND.
Re: Where is the best city to live for bird hunting, hands down?
Perth would be very good ....if you fancied a move to Bonnie Scotland !

What do you consider nearby? I think Minneapolis is great for the hunter/fisher that wants to have a variety of options available while still maintaining a good balance for family life. You wont be hunting before or after work, but it's easy to get up north for grouse or out west for pheasant on the weekends. Lots of good lake fishing right in the cities. Stream fishing can be had on the mississippi for smallies, or make a weekend for steelhead on the Brule. Lake minnetonka (western suburbs) and lake waconia (a little further west) have huge muskies and lots of them. Gotta get up early though because there's a lot of recreational boat traffic. Lake mille lacs has great walleye fishing and is only a couple hours north of the cities. Duluth is about three hours north. Fun family vacation or steelhead fishing/grouse hunting in the area. Actually, I've always thought living outside of Duluth would be fun since you could potentially work in duluth but have great fishing and hunting right at your doorstep.

Chamberlain, SD. You don't get everything you need as far as shopping and the City life. But you can catch a quick limit of Walleye in the morning on the Missouri River and get a limit of Pheasants in the afternoon on the banks of the river. Or you can get a mule deer at sunset and some honkers in the morning. Or whatever combination you prefer. Or if you finish all of the above and its still light out you can blast away at prairie dogs.

Depends on what type of bird hunting you want to do. Some of the best migratory bird hunting is within 30mins of Houston, TX, Our Bass and saltwater fishing is great and we have over 4 million whitetail's. We don't have Pheasant or Chukar however.

What's a waterfowl lease worth these days in TX?Brazosvalleyvizslas wrote:Depends on what type of bird hunting you want to do. I think an awful lot of that depends on your level of disposable income, and how much of that you wish to dedicate to outdoor pursuits.
If you are thinking public access, it would have to be pretty much west of the Mississippi, I should think, for non-grouse species, and north of I 80 for grouse.

I have a childhood friend who owns Central Flyway Outfitters so I have it pretty good and if you guide for an outfitter you get paid and still get to shoot birds. I have another friend who runs Rio Brazos Hunting Preserve so I get to guide out there also.

Bozeman/Belgrade, Montana
World class fishing (Missouri river, East & Main Gallatin, Upper/Lower Madison, Yellowstone, Big Horn, Flathead Rivers, Bitterroot, Big Hole, to name a few) and some of the best bird hunting I've ever seen within 3-4 hrs. I am definitely a fan of ND/SD, but there is just something that draws me to the mountains

Re: Where is the best city to live for bird hunting, hands down?
Duluth, Minnesota is a nice metropolis with lots of grouse and tons of fishing and game just outside the city. Not the best for birds, but it gives you a great overal hunting experience and a bigger than average metropolis.
Osakis/Alexandria, Minnesota has excellent duck and goose action, decent pheasant, and good fishing. Alexandria is also a nice city with a lot of tourism.
Both areas have a relatively low cost of living and plenty of ammeneties and job opportunities.
I like living in Minneapolis for the same reasons mentioned by someone else earlier in this thread. None of the places I'm mentioned are the "best bird hunting, hands down" but they offer a well rounded experience for an outdoorsman who needs a metropolis for work/family.

Moro, Oregon hands down! In Sherman County between the John Day and Deschutes River! Chukar, Huns, Quail, pheasant.... all day, everyday! It is bird dog paradise!
oh, and I forgot geese...
If you like to fish, we have those rivers plus the Columbia within 30 minutes.

This is obviously not true... Huns, Sharptail, and Pheasants are few and far between anywhere in Montana. We have no birds. I'd suggest New York City, Philadelphia, and Boston. I've seen flocks and flocks of pigeons there..... Bird hunting paradise from what I've seen.moneysshot wrote:Bozeman/Belgrade, Montana

Lewistown,Mt. Pheasants, Sharptail, ruffed grouse, Huns, spruce grouse. Turkeys, whitetail deer, mule deer, elk, black bear, world class waterfowl nearby, plenty of public land, great fishing. Nonres license is for the whole season drawing for big game and price keeps going up. White tail antlerless is cheap.
Easy drive to Great Falls for shopping and entertainment. Beautiful scenery and decent weather.
Pretty much has it all. Sucks if you need to make a living and women hate it.
Spent Two weeks near "bleep", N.D In October. Sharptails are way down, very few huns, a few pheasants. The drought and the oil business are

I don't think that it would be anywhere near the West Coast probably best to stay East of the Rocky Moutains, I hear that they have so many birds the sky is black.

I lived in Alex, and agree about the hunting and fishing, although a town of 10,000 people shouldn't have 60 stop lights.MinneapolisMatt wrote:Duluth, Minnesota is a nice metropolis with lots of grouse and tons of fishing and game just outside the city. Most of Central Kansas, good fishing, waterfowl, and great upland. Nothing wrong with where I am in the state but, Central has more quial,p.chickens, and pheasants with the waterfowl thing too.
