crate size for Brittany
crate size for Brittany
I apologize, but I haven't found a definitive answer. And yes, I'm sure I'm putting more thought into this necessary, but unfortunately (for my wife and kids especially), that's the way I am.
I should have a female Brittany puppy in the middle of March and I need a crate / kennel / carrier whatever it is people call them. What size are folks using for their in standard adult sized Brittanys?
Medium 500 series 28"L x 20.5"W x 21.5"H
-or-
Intermediate 600 series 32"L x 22.5"W x 24"
Thanks for the help.

You are going to need more than one size or one that has dividers to accommodate the pup as he/she grows. You want one that the pup has just enough room to stand up and turn around in, In my experience once they are fully crate trained they can be in a over sized crate and not mess in it but that is just my experience. To me both of those you listed would be to big for a pup the smallest one may be OK for a Britt around 6 months old.

You want just enough room for the dog to walk in, turn around and lay down. More than that will only get them in trouble, especially when travelling.
I use intermediate size for my pointers. They ain't huge, but they ain't smal(45-65#). That would be bigger than necessary for an adult brittany.
I would suggest a medium crate. Nice thing is that it is the largest size tha come with a handle on top, so it is easy to move around.
I have a couple of mediums also. I got them when I bought a pup from a distant kennel and they had to air freight the puppy. I have a small pointer(35#) who fits in a medium crate just dandy.

My female Brit is around 18.5 inches and 38lbs. medium is a great fit.
Re: crate size for Brittany
Yup, we use the mediums here (I have 7 Brittanys).
Re: crate size for Brittany
Thanks everyone for the replies. I plan on putting a divider inside and moving it as the pup grows. I was thinking two crates would be nice too. One for the house and one for the truck.
Thanks again.

Do yourself a favor and atleast go look at Ruff Tuff kennels website. They have a video on there that you can watch. They are more pricey but it's a onetime purchase.

crate size for Brittany
Late, I know, but Medium here. 2 dogs, 4 crates. 1 each in house, 1 each in truck.
Re: crate size for Brittany
Those Ruff Tough kennels are indeed nice. I'll definitely be looking into one of those for the truck.

Re: crate size for Brittany
36Lx 24Wx 27H has been perfect for my Britt. He can stand up with a few inches to spare over his head, and he can stretch out if he wants. But it's still small enough to discourage soiling. When he was younger, I put a box inside on one side so that it would be smaller while he was being potty-trained. Then, as he grew, the box was removed, and he had the whole crate with no issues.
Re: crate size for Brittany
Get a medium for transporting and a large for sleeping. I have never had a smaller one for a puppy but have never had an issue where I needed it. I carry two dogs in a large when I have to use it.

Re: crate size for Brittany
I have a 49lb Brittany and use a medium size crate and it works fine for him.
Re: crate size for Brittany
For my Brittanys, I use the medium for transporting them in the back of my Jeep and I use the intermediate with doubled sleeping pads for lots of cushioning for their sleeping quarters in the house. I have used this combination for the last 10 years with great results. If I could only have one crate per dog it would be the medium.

Re: crate size for Brittany
We have a small a medium and a large in our bedroom. The 7 month old still fits in the small wire crate. Any of the dogs alone fit in the medium and the large fits all 3 girls together. When we go into town to run errands, all 3 girls prefer to be crated together in the big crate... the boy usually goes in the truck with us. Everyone seems happy with the arrangement.
