First pennsylvania grouse. Her first day of grouse hunting ever. She is 3yr old.-- a great pheasant and turkey dog.
Second photo, was her 2nd day. bag limit is only 2 . 6 flushes less than 3 hours. thats better than average for PA. I had 4 hrs driving for only 3hrs hunting.

I shot the first couple photos of this sequence today then handed the camera off to my wife.
We watched Trixie roll out off a big mesa then got a point signal. After tracking...and tracking...and tracking, finally spotted her head:
I zoomed in and manually focused for one quick shot - love the wind blowin' her ears around:
Switched to auto and handed the camera off to the Mrs - little out of focus but still a good capture:
Actually gave the birds a pass, couldn't bring myself to shoot at a pair.

Or was it you going in for the MISS
Great bunch of pictures, I am going to have to come out that way to hunt before I am too old and out of shape to handle that country.

Yah, we were horsebackin' that day - had to beg the young whippersnappers to give my old legs a breather!! Takes it's toll on 'em bustin' a gut to get to points like these a few times a day - shot these photos yesterday also in same outing, Trixie and Bugs put the hurt on the Mrs. and I:
Bad news for my legs is I'm headin' back out in a few minutes...good news is I'm headin' back out in a few minutes!!

I was a little beat! That first day was pretty brutal, Doc and I left the truck in a pretty good rain fall. Dogs got the first covey pointed in the fog! Never had that happen before. Then it cleared up and we had 5-6 coveys pointed in the next 2 hours.QuillGordon wrote:The Mrs may be natural. Timing was spot on

Tn duck hunting season came to a close last week. I was able to get my 5 mo old britt out there for a couple of trips. He did great in the boat and held fairly steady while working the spreads.

Took the dogs out and worked them on a couple of pigeons before going on a run.
Put Indy on the CC, as I wanted to make sure he did not move after the flush, but as it turned out he didn't move a foot.

Re: Photo of the Day
Most of the snow is gone and it's a nice warm day. Huntin' season is over but the dogs wanted to go for a run.
The bottom picture is my 5 month old pup, "Penny 6". I thought she might be pointing a phez, but it turned out to be a meadow lark---If they ever open a season on our state bird--she'll be ready  Anyway we had fun today

Re: Photo of the Day
Some pictures from Sunday when my wife joined the dogs and I for some training and a run around the "Ranch"
Put out a couple of pigeons and did some STF work with some others
Ace tends to cheat on the first bird by following my trail to the bird. You see him running 10 ft down wind of where I walked to find an point the first bird
Indy backed him really well from about 40 yards, and my wife got to see him up close.
Indy pointed the next couple of birds, so Ace was backing,
We started heading back to the truck, and Indy made a long cast. I got a beep on the garmin, and headed that way with Ace.
Came around a tree to find Ace backing.
Then got a little farther around the trees to see Indy standing
So I got another pic with them both in frame, then went in to flush. Had a hen come up.
These guys flew low over us at the end of the day.

Re: Photo of the Day
Went out to the grouse grounds to see if the pups couldnt scare up a couple. The 5 mo old Britt (Bernie) pinned one, and held steady for a while before barging in. My hunting buddy's Vizsla (4.5 months, Holston) was having trouble in the snow but started to get the hang of it an hour or two in. The Vizsla pup lives in a golf course neighborhood and it showed! Funny how much a young pup can learn if you run him early and often enough. Couldnt be more proud of my little Britt... he is having a great introductionary hunting season. He has great potential, and is a hunting machine (Shambo's Dark Shadow/Just Call Me Roy/NLB lines). I cant wait to get my hands on Holston a little more... the Vizsa pup comes from some outstanding breeding (Busch Vizslas in Ill.), but he needs more mountain running and less golf course action.

Thanks guys, the little guys is definitley a looker. What I love about him is his smarts, drive, and the way he acts with my wife and daughter.... wasnt always the case with the latter.
Deseeker... Penny6 seems to fit right in with your crew, great looking Britt as always.

Re: Photo of the Day
Bernie was just getting used to the boat on this trip. This was ultra fast water (cold tailwater) with a lot of jagged limestone rocks. The river was flooded and they opened up the dam. Good for hunting, not good for practicing retrieves... so I kept him him in the boat while floating. We spent midday easing down some flooded swamp and Bernie went on point multiple times on sitting mallards. I put one down when he held steady and they flushed, he went in to retrieve a the duck. Retrieved it 5 yards and dropped it... he should get the hang of it. Practice makes perfect.Ghosted3 wrote:Pup do any retrieves or just go along to get use to the sounds and the feeling of the boat?boonebrit wrote:Tn duck hunting season came to a close last week. Took this today. Thought it was a pretty cool picture of Indy with Ace in the background.
Re: Photo of the Day
Revive this thread. Indy has some staples in his front leg, so I put him on a CC and had him do some backing.
