Weasel?
Weasel?
I haven't gotten around to using the quail recall pen I built earlier this year, but it was successful in catching this little guy off of my front porch over nite. Evidently the 1/2" x 1" wire is small enough, because he can't figure out how to get out. I've never seen one before, but I'm guessing this is a weasel?
Re: Weasel?
You have guessed correctly and they don't play nice with quail.
Re: Weasel?
I knew I was looking at a killer, just wasn't 100% sure which kind. I'm going to go around and check all my pens, to make sure I don't have any holes under them or in the wire.

Around here we know those as Least Weasels.....as with all, quite the musky smell.

I think if you look it up a least weasel is not much bigger than a long mouse. The pic is of a full sized weasel that is found in a large area of the country.Mountaineer wrote:Around here we know those as Least Weasels.....as with all, quite the musky smell.

The cage was initially under my whoa table and kind of dark. So first I thought it was a field mouse with a white chest. Then as I moved it out, I thought egads! we have rats. Then I noticed the length and the fuzzy tail. The body wasn't much more than 6" and then the tail. I wasn't sure if it was a baby or mature, as I've never seen anything so small. I'm thinking I've only seen mink before--like ferret size. But I can tell you that when I went to move the cage, it charged me, chirping out some battle cry. That garnered a gasp and a flinch, as I didn't expect something so small to be so proactive.

Could well be...least weasels are, with tail, about 10" in length.ezzy333 wrote:I think if you look it up a least weasel is not much bigger than a long mouse. The tail is reckoned to be less than 25% of the body tho....when first looking at the body, I pegged that one in the photo at 7 -7 1/2" and least weasel body size.
But, looking again, the tail length, more than the body size, would label it a long-tailed weasel.
Perhaps, a young one.
I guess it all makes a difference.
Irregardless, as they say around here....it's a weasel.
