Using a Horse Trailer as a Dog Trailer

Post by SwitchGrassWPG » Fri Sep 27, 2013 6:11 am

Is anyone using a horse trailer as a dog trailer? I'm considering converting a fully enclosed, 2 horse trailer into a dog trailer in an effort to reduce the amount of dust the dogs have to deal with when driving on our dirt country roads.

Any inputs or pictures would be appreciated.

Probly not what your looking for, but when Im running dogs around home I will use my 16ft stock trailer and close the devider, dogs in the front horses in the back. i just let the dogs free range in the trailer though.

Make sure you seal the floor also. Our trailer has a wood floor with stall mats on top of it, and we still get a fair amount of dust and dirt in it.

I think the horse trailer would bounce the heck out of dogs.

A friend of mine has converted a two horse straight load into a dog hauler. Boxes along one wall, gear in the manger and hanging on the other side wall.

Too much weight = too little mpg. Not a good idea.

Depending on what he drives a two horse may not drop mileage much at all.

I doubt it will bounce any more than a dog trailer.

I've never seen a horse trailer bounce nearly as bad as some of the dog trailers I've seen...

I would be concerned about the dogs getting bounced around, but if there are two walking axles it would be somewhat reduced. Dog trailers generally have a single axle, so that would be worse for bouncing than a horse trailer with double axles, but there are single axle horse trailers out there. There is a lot of difference between the weight of the load involved when transporting a few dogs and some equipment, compared to a couple of 1200 lb horses. The springs wouldn't be compressed much with no weight loaded in the trailer. I'm not a fan of trailering dogs at the best of times, but sometimes there's not an alternative.

It would be pulled with a 1/2 Dodge w/ a Hemi. Doesn't get great gas mileage as it is.

Personally, I don't like to use a trailer, but at this point I don't have much choice...more dogs than I can transport in any other fashion. I do currently have a dog trailer, but on the roads I travel, it allows too much dust in the dog compartments.
