How long for an EP to reach full growth?

Post by Brazos » Tue Nov 05, 2013 8:24 pm

How long does it take an English Pointer to reach full size? I have a 6 month old EP that is around 42 pounds. My wife thinks he looks shrimpy compared to our last EP (granted he is now gone and was a puppy 13 years ago, so hard to remember). I think he looks normal for his age but at times he looks little to me to compared to my 13+ year old GSP. I have forgot how long it takes for a dog, EP, to reach full size.

21 months and 3 days... Well I really don't know, but there can be a great difference in the size of pointers. I have a 3 yr old male that is 55 lbs in fighting weight and a 22 month old female that might push 42 lbs on a fat day. But I train with a guy that has a 70 -75 lb male that is not fat at all.

I would think they would have reached their frames max at 18 months but it might be 24 months before they are fully filled out.

Hard to say. I have a female just shy of 2 and weighed in at 60lbs six months ago. For her size vet said she looks great. She is not fat but tall. She is a birdacholic

I'd say it takes about 15 months for ta pointer to reach their full physical height and length, but it may take a full two years for the pup to fill out.

The others are right...pointers come in all sizes from 35# to 70#.

It ain't the size of the dog...it is the size of their heart. That is especially true of pointers, I think.

I have a neutered male that I believe reached full height around the 15 month mark, who still at 19 months seems to be putting on a bit more bone on the shoulders. He was 42 pounds at 7 months and is 64 pounds and lean now, but he and a sister were the biggest pups in the litter and I knew when I got him at 7 months that he was likely to end up big. Vet says he's in great shape, and people in the park occasionally lecture me he needs more food, lol.

Thanks. Sounds like around 15 months to get to their full frame potential. We were both trying to remember from our last EP and were thinking 6-9 months. Our last EP was 60lbs and was a puppy 13 years ago. That is the last puppy we have had. So it's been a while.
