Pigeon nesting in floor

Post by CCBIRDDOGMAN » Fri May 08, 2015 8:50 am

I have a friend that I sold some pigeons to but hasn't had any luck with them having any babies, well I had a bird that I really like and didn't want to sell but she had been mated up with a male for a while and she had laid several eggs in the floor of my coop but I just kept tossing them because I had other pairs that were laying like crazy and I assumed she was laying in the floor because the other nests were taken. So I boxed her and her mate up and shipped them to him (he is 3 hrs away) as loaner birds to see if she would have some babies for him, well of course she laid in the floor of his coop even with open nest boxes available so he made her a spot in the corner and sure enough she hatched two babies yesterday, My question is, would he be better off leaving them in the floor or trying to move the babies up to a nest?

I've tried it. Didn't work for me.

Yeah I'm afraid she and the male wouldn't go up there and feed em. Hopefully they will be ok in the floor.

They will be fine. You have to shut them in a nest box if you want them up there before they lay.

I've had lot's of nest's on the floor, not a problem. But I do create some privacy for them with a wood box, Bottom and one side open. Over the tears I've learned that pigeons know more about getting baby's going that I do! My nest box's are not all used but the one's being used have a privacy curtain over the front. And guess what, all those don't get used!

I have found that babies raised on the floor tend to nest there. Not always but there seems to be a connection.

I have the same thing happening. Is it possible that one or two of my nesting birds could be laying eggs on the floor because their nest is occupied? I have been tossing them out thinking they have been abandoned too CCBIRDDOGMAN.

Birds often lay on the floor if you are using bedding of some type.

Half of mine nest on the floor, even with more than an ample number of nesting boxes.
