New guy
New guy
Well I have been poking around this nice site for a few days and thought I would join. I recogonize some names from a few other forums I visit. There appears to be a severe lack of long-tails around here, so I thought
I would try to even things out slightly.
Here is a little about me. Grew up in upstate NY hunting grouse and woodcock behind English Setters. My family had setters for as long as I can remember.
I ended up in California for a good bit, where I wasn't really able to have a dog. Luckily I had good friends with some Brits and GSPs and got to do a good bit of hunting the three quail and chukar they have out there.
I'm in Colorado now, and was able to finally get another setter in the summer of 05. I'll be picking up another before long, but want to space them out a little bit. I hunt pheasant and bobwhite more than anything now, but that is only because they are close. My main love is chukar (and huns when they are found in the same habitat). We have chukar here in Colorado and I hunt them here, but it's pretty nasty marginal habitat without a lot of birds. I guess I ended up hunting 7 states this year from ND to AZ. I really enjoy trying new places, and getting the young dog into as many different species as possible. I believe she has had over 12 different species shot over her points now. She will be 2 in a few months, and her range continues to grow which is great by me. My favorite sight is a big going dog tearing up the chukar hills.
Here are a few pics from last season.
Ptarmigan country in Sept, looks like chukar country sometimes
White tailed ptarmigan
Chukar hunting Sept 2nd. Hot and brutal
At least the river is cool on the ride in and out
I'll post a few more pics...

A few more.
Some bobwhite hunting closer to home
Some Idaho chukar and Hun country, there is a dog on point of the middle "hump" in this one.
Here it is zoomed up a bit
And when you finally make the long slog over
A covey of huns pegged
Here is some typical Kansas quail country
From Sunday afternoon, our last wild bird hunt of the year
I look forward to reading and posting here in the future.
