Oh, he's beautiful!

The pic reminds me of when my guy was the size of my wife's yorkie.

Wow, what beautiful pictures...thanks everyone. They are literally a dream come true aren't they? We all picture that stoic point over a bird the very day we pick one out of the litter!

Thanks! The patches stay the same. The white was nearly pure white as a small pup, the ticking came out as she grew.

With a shorthair pup being raised in the house I figure half the cost of the pup being spent on replacing household items.
My white shorthair chewed holes in 3 king comforters which my wife had no problem letting me know what "My pup" did. Then quickly replacing them.

Very true & this pup has been no different as he has the market cornered on rascalism sometimes..but we just laugh and enjoy every ounce of Shorthair that he is.

That said..at the end of the day he is bar none the finest Shorthair overall that we have ever had & in reality the material losses have been minor.

He cost us the basket, a remote, 2 pairs of glasses, and a cd..that’s it..he's four now.

Now if we want to get into shorthairs of the past..well..that’s an entirely different matter altogether.

My setter chews stuff just to be irritating. He never chews at night and he never chews when we leave him alone. He only chews when he's not getting enough attention.

Oft heard at our house "Honey, do you have the dog with you?"

Thanks Sharon. Both dam and sire have passed - sire passed about 5 months ago. Emma is going to be 14. She is very frail but still hanging in there.
Thanks for asking.

Sorry Sharon, to answer your question:
Sire was Ziggi's Grouse Magic - "Auggie". George Tracy had him on his string and really like him. The dam was my Tina. She was a Smith bred setter. Tina and I never hit it off so I sold her to a chap in WV. He contacted me one day and asked, "How could you ever sell a dog of this caliber? What more could you have wanted?"
All I can say is, it had to do with our personalities more than her ability.
Emma has been the best dog any person could ever ask for, in the field or in the home. I don't deserve another like her.

Thanks; very interesting.
Lady will probably be my last gun dog and it breaks my heart. Getting too old to be out daily with a new young gun dog - plus getting up at 6 am for a puppy. :) Stuck with a JRT for the rest of my life.

I'm in the same boat and can honestly say that taking the dogs and spending time in the field is the thing I am missing most. I guess I am surprised now that I am here with a little time to look back.

Stopped hunting for 15 yrs. while the kids were so busy with 3 sports each. The two boys and I are back hunting and I have dogs that will get me through 70. Not sure after that. Guess we'll see. Planning to have one more in 5 yrs or so that would get me through to 75 but don't want to have a dog that I can't hunt. Not fair to the dog.

Greg, the dog's main interest is spending time with you and then the field, same as yours You don't need to worry about being fair to the dog. Just be sure to be fair to yourself.

Great pictures and stories. I guess I am one of the oldies too. We got a FB Springer pup last spring, and she will likely be our last bird dog. We have 2 Britts, and a GSP, but like to run a flushing dog in the mix too. We'll be 75 when the pup is 10, so we can hobble off into the sunset together. It's so hard to watch the dogs age and have to be retired from the truck on long hunt days. Our son and his wife take the retired dog to stay at their home while we are gone with the others. It's pretty hard to leave an old girl behind, but works out for the best.
