GSP advice

Post by lking » Thu Sep 13, 2007 1:11 pm

You'll have to excuse the ignorance, but for the past 8 years I've owned nothing but labs and pointers.

I'm starting to begin research on the GSP. Desires would be closer to mid-range dog. No trialing would be done, just extensive bird hunting on grouse and woodcock in WI. Natural retrieve would be a great plus.

Herein lies the question...are there certain lines of GSP's that bring different things to the table and, if so, what lines would I benefit from matching the needs above???

Thanks for any related help.

At the area in which you live, I would start my search at Caden's Kennels at Campbellsport WI. Very near you and Dennis there is a good trainer, breeder and will know what you are looking for and may very well have something going.

With me I want a biddible dog and one with a great nose, with that you can rule the hunting world.

I've been told the Shooting Star line is suppose to be great. I have a friend that has a dog from jim reiser's shooting star kennels and she is a great grouse and woodcock dog, works close to medium in range. Very good family dog. I would recommend this line of dogs to anyone.

Ah, twice in one day my now obligatory plug advocating the advantages of choosing a breeder/trainer nearby.

Best regards, Greg J.

I'll double the comment for Dennis at Cadens kennels, great trainer, and a great kennel of dogs, personable and the hunt club is a great place to hang out. I have 1 dog from Dennis and 1 pup bred from a male from Dennis kennel, and Maverick kennels in Minnesota.

I have 2 pups out of Ruger from Cadens Kennel and I really like them BUT I would not consider these pups closer to med range. If he's want closer to med range then I would look more along the line of some NAVHDA or AKC gundog breedings. There is a lot of good bloodlines and breeder of those bloodlines up your way just do your homework.

I have to agree with Volraider. I have nothing negative to say about Dennis or his operation and in fact have heard nothing but positive about it. My bitchs is out of Saddle Tramp and I like her enough I bred her last spring. I just would not look to his dogs as being short to medium range grouse dogs.

You have quite a few GSP lines in WI to pick from though. For primary grouse dogs, I might suggest these folks to start with:

There are a lot of good GSP Breeders in Wisconsin. I purchased a dog from dankar kennels last year and am 100% satisified with the dog I got. (My dogs brother just ran a NAVHDA Utility PZ 1 201 at 13 months of age!)

Carey at Grouse Point Kennels runs a good operation and I have done some training with him. He produces some great dogs.

As mentioned above Eau Pleine Kennels is another one. I have known Ken for 25+ years and in the past he has put out some good dogs. I do not know if he is currently breeding dogs.

Check out some of the NAVHDA chapters there are a lot of other good breeders that I am missing. These were some I have interacted with.

Thank you all for direction. I have been in contact with Ken already and I've had the priviledge of hunting over 2 grouse point dogs. Both were impressive. Once again, much appreciated.

I would agree with volraider and others. There are a lot of kennels that would fit your needs in this area and I would start with a NAVHDA group. Cadens has produced numerous, maybe hundreds of fine NAVHDA dogs in the past. They have taken a shift to the Shooting dog, All age GSP lines and have done EXTREMELY well. Dennis has an awesome program going there. You need to make sure your needs fits your dog. Some of the following produce closer working, yet nose choked dogs.

http://www.bonasaflats.com - John Voight & Brian Blanke
http://www.thunderheadgsps.com - Ron Stott
http://www.krystalcreekkennels.com - Al and Tracy Harmeyer
http://www.sharpshooterskennel.com - Clyde Vetter
http://www.cadenskennels.com - Dennis Brath

Those top three and even Clyde's kennels are not far from you at all. Check out a lot of kennels and dogs and you will not be disappointed at all. WI offers a LOT of choices in the GSP world!

There is a litter on the ground now in Wis out of shooting starr lines the sire being VC Shooting Starrs Ringo MH, this dog is a half brother of my bitch, you can not go wrong with this line. I live in Milwaukee and have a place in Crivitz where I hunt grouse and woodcock, these dogs are in my opinion the finest choice for your kind of hunting. If you want more info I can give you my phone number and we could talk more , I hate typing. Bill
