to cut or not to cut
My brittany Ripley is going on 6 months, The vet says it's time to make a choise. He has a great blood line I'm told, Chilcote, Twenty pines, Ect.... The breeder has said that he would like to see Rip's
line carry on. What are the pros, and cons of this proceedure?
Better family dog ? Worse hunter? Dig under my fence looking for......
Help....

No matter what, I would delay the decision till the dog is physically mature. If you do it early, you will give up physical development and he will never have the endurance of an intact dog.

My brittany will be 4 years old this year and NO SNIPPING.
Can't ask for a more well behaved dog around my 2 year old niece, 11 yar old niece and 9 year old nephew. Of course he has to makr his territory whnever he gets out of the truck and he is a territorial dog to say the least but as far as hurting anyone I don't think he would (but I wouldn't go grabbing at me like you're going to hurt me when he is around). Any stray dogs that come around he lets them know where HIS yard starts.
Overall though I can't say the snip would help him any, he's the type of dog I want. I would give your britt some time, they will mellow out and calm down after a little time.

A serious word of CAUTION:
Three weeks ago I had to make the decision to put Max down. 2 years ago he had cancer, the kind of cancer that only a fixed, male dog gets. Sorry, but I can't remember the name of it. The vet thought she had gotten all of it and he was okay for a while. He had been slowly getting more agressive, forgetful, and finally, just down right dangerous. We took him in and the cancer had returned. She couldn't guarantee me that it hadn't gone to his brain, thus causing the craziness. Max was going to be 10 this year, but I made the awful decision to put him out of his misery. It was very hard, but he was dangerous. When they asked if we wanted his ashes, I just freaked out. I obviously hadn't thought about putting him down and I just shreiked "NO". My son brought me back to reality, so I asked what they would do with them. My vet told me that he would be scattered on her place, out in the country, and would be with a whole bunch of other bird dogs, "hunting forever on her ranch". Needless to say, I just fell apart.
Our beloved Max is now out on a 300 acre ranch, hunting birds, having a ball, and has no more pain. I couldn't have asked for a better beginning to his after life.
I will NEVER fix another male dog.

Sorry to hear about your dog, dad and I have had a few pass on and one we had to put down. I know how it feels, some say it is like losing a family member, it ain't LIKe loosing one you are loosing one, one that is more devoted and loyal than any other and doesn't argue and will go to heck and back for you or with you and happy ain't even the word to do it the whole time. Sinckness, aches and pains, lousy weather, and a long ride won't stop them if you ask, day in and day out.
I think I am about to tear up now!
I have aleardy decided where Rocket is going to be buried or spread. Rocket is only three and a half right now so I hope I have many more years ahead.
To me I there are family members I would rather loose.

Well you are saying your dog has some good lines... The Pro's are::: With testing and trialing and hunting this dog stands a chance to pass on great treats and to improve the breed! At 6 months it is hard to say that he will be the TOP PRODUCER of all time but once you cut them off you can not put them back!
Male dogs are Male dogs, take the steps to stop them from breeding undesired bitchs..... No not Cuting them!
If you do Cut let the dog Mature and gain all he can from the Testostoron....... Ohh Ya you can also cut a dog anytime after 6 months to it is not a window period.

pros and cons
I've never heard of a dog becoming ill because they were cut, but because they were not. A lot depends on if you have female dogs around that are intached for breeding an etc. along those lines I've seen alot more folks waiting till males are 3 to4 before the snip so they do fully mature. It comes down to do you want him to have balls or not.
