This is the info that I found on them:

The Field Spaniel was developed in England during the latter half of
the 19th century to fulfill the demand for an all black, medium-sized,
well-boned dog adept either at working in dense cover or in retrieving
from land and water. For a time there was considerable interbreeding
among all varieties of spaniel, and the progeny that resulted were
usually registered under the variety they most resembled. Eventually,
with the advent of more formalized dog shows, spaniels under 25 pounds
were recognized as Cocker Spaniels, large liver and white or black and
white dogs became known as English Springer Spaniels, and the solid
color dogs over 25 pounds retained the name Field Spaniel.

The first Field Spaniels in the United States were listed with the
American Spaniel Club in the 1880's and registered with the American
Kennel Club (AKC) in 1894; by the end of the 1920's the breed had
disappeared from the AKC registration books. Field Spaniels were
returned to the United States in 1968 when R. Squire and C. Tuttle
imported three from England. These three Fields and subsequent imports
form the basis for the majority of Field Spaniels presently in the
United States. The Field Spaniel Society of America was formed in
1978, and is recognized by the AKC as the parent Club for the Breed.

L. W. "Whit" Boykin (1861-1932), a planter, land appraiser and well-known sportsman of the Boykin community just outside Camden, South Carolina, along with his kinsmen the Canteys, experimented with many breeds to resolve the problems posed by their Wateree hunting trips. With selective breeding and a little luck, Boykin developed a small multipurpose retriever now known as the Boykin spaniel.

The first Boykin spaniel, or the precursor of today's breed, was reportedly a small, stray spaniel type dog that befriended a banker walking from his home to the First Presbyterian Church in Spartanburg, South Carolina around 1905-1910. Alexander L. White (1860-1942) liked the little dog and took it home. After the dog showed some aptitude for retrieving, White sent the dog called "Dumpy" to his longtime friend and hunting partner Whit Boykin. In Boykin's hands the little stray developed into a superb turkey dog and waterfowl retriever. This dog became the foundation stock for the Boykin spaniel. Other ancestors are reported to be the Chesapeake Bay retriever, springer spaniel, cocker spaniel, and the American water spaniel.
The main registry for Boykin Spaniels is the Boykin Spaniel Society (BSS). The The United Kennel Club (UKC), and the Continental Kennel Club (CKC) also recognizes this breed. When buying a purebred Boykin, make sure the pup is BSS registered. The litter must be registered with the Society before 1 year of age. No dogs can be registered after that time.
The Boykin Spaniel Society has not worked to have the breed recognized by the AKC and has instead maintained its own registry of purebred Boykin Spaniels. The founding members of the Boykin Spaniel Society and its leadership and membership have seen no benefit that would be derived from any affiliation with the American Kennel Club. The current leadership still agrees with this position and continues to work to promote the Boykin Spaniel within the guidelines and objectives as set forth in the Boykin Spaniel Society constitution.
