toe nail problems

Post by ourhunters » Tue Feb 22, 2005 9:37 pm

I know we had the topic of clipping nails, and I am the worst when it comes to that! And, that is probably why one of our dogs is having problems. Has anyone ever seen infections under the skin around the toe nail? He won't even let me touch that foot. It's been this way for quite some time, I thought it was getting better and after attempting to dremel his nails down the other day, it flared up. Possibly from him licking it because it's sore. This just seems bad... Could it possibly make a dog lame being infected in the feet? What do I do? Take him to the vet? Or, try to clean it out with something, which to tell you the truth may be almost impossible as he has some major foot issues and I don't want a limb bit off.

ps I know I'm always full of questions like this, a true worrier!

You need to get him to the vet as soon as possibly. Sore feet are painful and you must get it attended to before a real problem can set in. A birddog is only as good as his feet!

He may just need an antibiotic – little infections like this can often clear up with a few doses. (we always try to keep a little extra dog meds on hand – but if you do not KNOW or are UNSURE what the problem is and what meds to give GO TO THE VET – over time you will gain more knowledge and begin to be able to treat these little issues yourself)
