Zachsdad,

Carded pigeons are used to simulate a flushing, wild bird. We tie a piece of cardboard to their leg with a piece of yard about 6 to 8 inches long. The cardboard size depends on how wild or strong the pigeon is. Usually start with about 6" x 6". The object is to keep the pigeon from flying away after he flushes. He can still flush well but once airborn, the card creates drag and brings him down.

You can do the same thing with a piece of garden hose, which is the method described by Delmar Smith in Bill Tarrant's "The Best Way to Train Your Bird Dog." (excellent book)

Thats true, the garden hose works too. Another good way is to use a 20' line tied to a horsehoe. I prefer the card though. Less weight for the bird to lift off the ground and I tend to get better flushes. The hose and the horseshoe bring them down with weight, the card is light and causes drag while they are in the air.

Lots of ways to do it. A lot depends on the cover too. If you have lots of trees. the carded pigeons don't work too well. Keep hanging up.

Brad,

my bird release should be at my doorstep today or tomorrow.

sorry for the long wait, I had to secure the funds for a purchase. Now what?

Rocco is still fired up about birds, and now he is pointing just about everything....still creeping a bit but pointing better than ever....

Thanks
