Getting DD pup!

Post by tmanker » Fri Feb 08, 2008 9:40 pm

Pup is from litter Vicki vom Hedge Row and Lord III v.d. Wupperaue out of Vom Flusswindung kennel. I'm pretty excited about getting a pup. Very much looking forward to it! Any comments on either of these above dogs?

Don't know about the dogs, but have fun and enjoy your puppy! I just got a 9wk GWP and I'm loving having a puppy in the house again!

My biggest concern is housebreaking the pup when I work 8-10 hours per day. Do I leave him in the crate all day or let him run in the kitchen and go on the floor if he needs to? To me that tells him that he can go on the floor which is the wrong message. An 8 week old pup is not capable of holding it more than a couple hours. My mother could let him out at lunch if absolutely necessary. I commute a half hour each way, so taking him out at lunch is just not an option for me. Any help is appreciated.

I guess it depends on how often you feed the pup. I feed 3 times a day, but I can go home to let her out every 3 hours or so. I don't feed her after 6pm and if I let her out for the last time around midnight she sleeps for about 5-6 hours without having to go. She's 9 weeks. We got my Brit at 7weeks, and I was up about every 2-3 hours. I don't know if the age made a difference, or if it's just the difference in the dogs.

If your mother is willing to help then have her let the pup out. or maybe a neighbor is willing to help? Not sure if thats an option, but when we got our pup the breeder had litter box trained him. We kept him in an enclosed area in the house and left the litter box in the same room. Then we gradualy moved the litter box outside and within a few weeks he was completely weaned off the litter box and pottied outside.
Try to pick him/her up on a friday so that you have the weekend to get started.
Enjoy your new pup. ahhh puppy breath...

Any opinions on Scott Kennels? Any other kennels that I can use temporarily to leave the pup outside when I'm at work? I would go permanent once the ground thaws out. I feel like I need him to be outside when he does his thing because otherwise it gives him the wrong idea.

I think the Scotts kennel would be great for your situation.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!

Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.
