Anyone ever built adog box for a truck?

Post by markj » Thu Mar 13, 2008 8:56 am

I am thinking of building a light weight box i can put on a trailor and pull behind my motorcycle. It will save me a ton in gas money and I can then use it in the truck come winter and the hunt.

I will remember that. I saw them tr4ailors last week and every one was like this. Gave me the idea for the MC trailor thing. Get 40 MPG on it.

??? I pull a bunkhouse camper behind it, been doing it for years now. I have a lot of miles on them bikes, run at leat 70,000 miles on em before i trade em off. On number 8 now :) had the camper 10 years now, has a king sized bed in it :)

Gotta go low budget :) am not rich, but want to get out and play. I sure did like the scene last week, my son has been talking about it all week now. He hasnt given me one bad day yet too so Ithink this is the thing for him. He is being good so I take him with this week. :) I will spend the dough on this for him and my sanity :) being a single parent isnt that easy and I need all the help I can get.

Mark, You realize the difference between an inanimate object or a 60 lb animal moving around back there. Ask the truck drivers what happens when they go around a curve with hanging meat. Or the difference between hauling dry material compared to liquid rolling around back there.

Think I would get a side car for the dog.

Used to run shag, picked up loaded trailors and left empty all night long, I know about shifting loads. Run 7 horses to KY at a time behind a 1 ton dually too :) pregnant mares they were.

I will build up the suspension make the area small enuff to lay down in like a crate so they dont move much for the shifting of the weight. :)

Not my first rodeo, I thank you for the concern too.

A sidecar is also an option but will cost a lot more than a rig as I can build. I am on a low budget, but soon this well be fixed too. New job starts next month.

If you have a 5 year old and are single you will be on a limited budget for years to come. The cost of schooling is scary and I hope you have family to help while you are at work.

Gots a daughter in Chreighton now boy is that costly. 2 more years and it will lighten up for that load. Wife moved out, she got tired of the country life and my dogs and hunting. Guess I hung too many deer this year :)

I have over 160 cousins alone :) we are tight too and I have been getting help from many of them.

We were going to retire early and she and I got pregnant. I wanted it, she didnt. Sooooo tis just me and my mini me :)

Me and my shadow....... :)

Mark, the trailer behind the bike thing is just plain crazy. remember, if you have your kid/kids with you you will need space and storage for the dog gear and the kid and all the stuff that comes along with kids. Buy, build or borrow a box or trailer for the truck or car. It would be money better spent, or at least you will think so when you are going down the road in Dec. or Jan. when the temp is well below the freezing mark. Trust me I know, with 3 kids and 7 gsp's you will want to spend your money on somthing that is year round transportation. :? Won't you? I just think you would get more bang for the buck that way. :D Right?

Keep the doors on the side. Have louvers that open and close to keep dust out. Inside the louvers, weld diamond mesh or some dogs will tear the louvers out. Don't have a lip on the door fronts. You want to be able to pull the mess straight out and not have to fight a lip. Use a tortion axle.
Make it out of metal or it'll be heavier than sin. You can't keep wood clean and it's heavy. Let us see pics when you get er done.
LIFE WITHOUT BIRD DOGS AND FLY RODS REALLY ISN'T LIFE AT ALL.

I could pull it behind my car or truck in bad weather. My son has 2 summers on the back of the wing already and he knows to pack light :) cause I pack his stuff. Lots of storage in a wing too. Just thinking about say 6 bucks a gallon. Not sure if we would run dec or jan I am hunting then and use the crates in the back of a truck.

Took my 3 males (one issold now) to the vet yesturday for rabies shots. young one threw up all over me and the other dogs. :(

Going to be at Br oaks tomorrow?

I've been kicking this Idea around for a while. The shifting load issue isn't a big deal because the hitch point is usually so low to the ground. If you make box so dog has to lay down that will lesson problem even more.
Let me know what you do. I ride most of the year in MN and will hopefully be getting a trailer together this summer. Good luck and don't let the non-riders get you down. It's a great idea and more and more people will be doing it. Only difficulty I see is getting into some areas with minimum maintenance roads.

Never :) they just dont know the pleasure of riding. Smell everything, see everything. Mom carried me in her belly on a BMW in 1958 :) Been on em all my life.

Dual purpose bike? Kawasaki has the klr 650, a company in ca turns em into diesels for the govt marines and they get 100 mpg :)

Scooters should sell great this season, some get 125 mpg and go 70 mph, can put two bags of groceries under the seat too.

City commuters take note :) a small dog would fit under the seat too. :)

Hi. I'm no bike expert, and as an Emergency Medical Tech, your post and some of the replys about the dangers--scared me for you. My husband however, has had motorcycles off and on for the last 18 years, and was a Harley Davidson Motorcycle Tech at two different dealerships for a couple years. He seems to think that if you get the trailer built for proper balance, and have enough tongue weight so that it trailers correctly--but no more extra weight you will be okay. He also says, like someone else did, to use a good heavy axle and don't give the dog any extra room to move around. He just told me that he had been thinking about the same thing the other day. It wouldn't work for us, because we always take everything......including the bathroom sink..... whereever we go. Just some thoughts. I hope it works out well for you.......and safe wishes.
