First Woody

Post by Ruffshooter » Fri Mar 28, 2008 5:03 am

Saw the first woodcock of the season this morning. He went twittering by my head with a puppy trying to keep up. I don't know where he is going to find a meal around here. Still 18" of snow in the woods. He was on the only bare piec of ground I have. Had the Front loader come by to push banks back so I would not be in a swimming hole. Hope the little guy found a meal.

To top it off another 4 to 6 inches of snow by end of day.

I bet that little timberdoodle wishes he were back in NC.

We're a little ahead of you in northern Minnesota. We still have relatively deep snow in sheltered areas but most areas exposed to sunlight are bare. An inch or two of overnight snow is virtually melted off by morning.

The ice is off of most smaller lakes by mid-April, except for the far north.

Haven't been looking for woodcock so don't know if they're back here yet.

Ruff,

The farmers started plowing the potato fields here last week, but the weatherman is calling for sleet today. Spring sure can be fickle.

Gotta keep an eye on my row of asparagus. The deer like 'em as much as me.

The woodcock came through here in the beginning of March.

JL

P.S. The ospreys are here so I'm sure the alewives are too.

The seagulls are back in Duluth. "Steven" the Seagull is back for the seventh year in a row. Steven raps on the lobby door of a local Super 8 until an employee brings him out a donut. You can find today's story at www.duluthnewstribune.com

Woodcock came through a couple of weeks ago... Zoomie found one in the woods by a bike path.

I think it was a case of mistaken identity on the part of the woody. Obviously the bird is unaware of our snow situation up here this winter.

Vizla Vince, I have to tell you that your avatar picture is one of the coolest I have ever seen.....it is a perfect description of every "V" I have ever met.

Funny thing, I never gave it a thought until Janet read my post and slapped me up side my noggin. Sorry for the title.

The snow is going away fast now, we have wind rain fog and now some bare spots on the hills sides. YEE HAWWWW.

That's why newspaper & magazine editors need to be a little perverted to catch those things!! My wife used to edit the base newspaper @ McGuire AFB, & would come home with all kinds of near misses like that (& some that didn't miss :P )!

Here are a couple links that show woodcock ranges. If my 6th grade geography teacher did his job then it appears that you have woodcock in your area. The two maps show different times of year for the KC area, but I would wager a bet that you have them year round.

I witnessed my first "mating flight" of the season last night, and heard the "PEEEEEENT"

The woodcock are passing thru PA as well! They have been around for the past 3 weeks. I'm not real familar with woodcock. However, the one I found was real easy to relocate. We were able to relocate it 3 times it stayed in the same area.
