New GDF!!!

Post by grant » Thu Apr 24, 2008 9:04 am

I'm looking into upgrading phpBB to version 3. Check out the benefits:

http://www.phpbb.com/about/features/

It looks like we'll gain a lot of the new features that we've been wanting!

To Do:
- Add ads back. -DONE
- Add Gun Dog Forum header back -DONE
- Adjust colors from blue to old colors.
- Look into html in signature issue... -DONE
The new forum only allows BB code in the signature. I've added this feature to PerfectPedigrees.com. Just login to Perfect Pedigrees and select My Admin. Next to a pedigree select "Get Webpage Code." Copy the BB code and past it into your signature.

Notes:
- This thing has so many features, I'm still figuring it out...
- Nice Moderator section for our mods. Looks like I don't have to custom write as much code for moderation...
- Members can use report this post feature to report bad posts...
- Members can upload file attachments with their posts
- Polls can have multiple answers...

I don't know what much of those attributes are, but free upgrade's are alway's nice. I also see that it allow's multiple votes. That would solve one of the problems bigshooter was having yesterday!

Definitely some good features there, Grant. I'd say go for it.
One feature I think would be very helpful is the "Report Post" functionality.
Would help ID & eliminate the spam easier.

I run a board on that version, it is very nice and much simpler for attaching pics and such.

Nice additional security and control features.

I see you could add subscriptions if desired.

Sounds like Ver. 3 is already past beta testing.

I didn't see any negatives.

I am a technilogical dinosaur so I don't know what most of that stuff means. However, if it keeps the spammers and the porn off the site than I say do it. This site is too good to be attacked with that trash.

If it is the same as the upgrade the GSP Forum made I do not like it. For dial up I cannot get anything to load, and I can't get hi speed here. So I do not get on there anymore.

Brenda if you have a phone line you should be able to get high speed Internet. It's called DSL and it is basically as fast as cable. Much nicer than waiting 15 min. for dial-up to load a page. Thought I would just let you know.

On another note I have been trying to load a picture in here of my Brittany for the past month off my camera. Keeps telling me the file is to big. Any suggestions would help. Thanks.

Sure wish this was true, but it's not. You have to be within so many miles of the main transsmission line, (and it's not all that far) before you can get DSL on your phone line. Been there done that... "pear"

Brenda, I am in the same boat as you. The only solution that I found was to go with a satelite dish for my online needs. It's much faster than the dial-up and I am happy with it.

Pear is right you can't always get DSL if you have phone service.

DSL is only within a little over a couple of miles. Brenda, check out the wireless, I think that is the way to go.

I also live outside DSL/Cable land. I am looking into a cell phone card for the laptop. Another alt to dial up.

DSL is like 3000 ft from the CO or Central Office

DSL depends upon how far you are from a hub or repeater, usually located at a central office. If I had to deal with dial up I'd tear my hair out.

I have called every company I could find on the internet, and no go. I have DirectTV and can't get it thru them. I am in a dead spot or something. Hope I can still get on here if it is changed.

It's not the same. Shorthairs.net uses a forum with the extension .aspx, while GDF uses .php boards. (Different language) That, and the look of GDF is just so much better (the stylesheet).

Also, if you have DirectTV you might look into HughesNet (formerly DirectWay)

I have HughesNet and it works for me. We don't have anything else available where I live.

Brenda, you can call Hughes.net yourself. I was stonewalled by DirectTV and told there wasn't anything available by them. Then I found out about Hughes.

Wow, throwing me for a loop here. Old set up sure was pretty/stylish, but I guess we'll get use to looking at this too...........especially if it keeps the spammers out. Guessing you're not done yet either. No problems here, logging in or seeing site. Thanks for all the effort you put into it. Denise

WOW! Hit my GDF Bookmark and I thought I clicked the wrong bookmark for a sec..... couldn't understand how, it's the first one at the top of the list and judging by how everything new looks, it will remain at the very top of the short list of worthwhile forums! Looks GREAT so far Grant!

It looks to generic and blah. I really liked the look of the Old GDF site to be honest with you.

Sometimes change is not a good thing and I think GDF took a step backwards with this new appearance scheme.

I don't know if you can choose colors. I'm getting used to the pale blue but the brown & whites of the old version reminded me of fall, hunting and dogs.

Can we wait to voice an opinion till we see the new version? This is like seeing a car frame with the motor mounted on the assembly line and saying we don't like the looks of the new car. You can't judge till you see it.

If watching the transition is really a bother then the site could be shut down while under remodeling. I like this way a whole lot better. And I'm sure the new version will be good when it is finished.
