I am getting my first pigeons tonight and I am buying some young ones and some adult breeders. The adults I am buying have never flown from the sellers loft. Will I be successful resettling the adults after two or three weeks in the new loft or should I just plan on making them prisioners?
Here is something that may be a complicator. The seller lives very close to me. There is only about 1/2 mile between us.
Any thoughts would be helpful.

I would keep the adults captive till they have nests and have young to feed. You may still lose one or two but most will come back if not all. Do not try to make them fly but just open the door and let them do whatever they want. Since they have never flown they will not fly as well as they should and they will have rouble landing.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!
Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

If you're getting young birds also I'd keep the older ones for breeders.Sometimes with older birds that have never flown, they will get Strong on the Wing, meaning that once they do get in the air and start flying they just keep on going and not return. If you have a few pair breeders, after a year you'll have more birds then you know what to do with. Each pair breeders will produce 8 young a year.

Ohiogsp would probably know best but the older homers I have I have never let out, and I wont ever let them out because most likely they will go home.

I got the birds last night and as it turns out I was sold all young birds. At least that's what the seller told me and I don't hink he is pulling any punches on me. Nothing to gain on his part since I was willing to buy them regardless of age.
Funny thing is I just got them last night and I already have an egg in one of the nests. Didn't expect that!

The birds you got are not really YB's if they laid a egg they would be at least 4-5 months old. The guy that sold them to you should give them back to you if they return to his loft. They will probably be ok if they have not flown but you may loose some just be carfull not to scare them when you start letting them go in and out on their own. If they get scared you will probably never see them again. Let them go in and out as they want for at least a week and make sure them are hungry when you open the loft up. Good luck
