Tornado hits Blue Dawn Kennels May 1, 2008

Post by Blue Dawn Kennel » Sun May 04, 2008 4:45 pm

We had a tornado hit our house, kennel and place late Thursday night early Friday morning. Keith & I are fine (I have some cuts from glass but ok) and all dogs, horses and cattle all good. The kennel sustained some major damage, our horse loafing shed is gone, our car lean to is also gone, our bedroom window blownout, south side of roof has to be all reshingled, front half of house has to be resided. Feed truck and my expedition all need repaired @ the body shop and our little storage shed also needs repair. Have all the metal, lumber and all already picked up so looks like nothing happened unless you knew the top off the back of the kennel was gone, and the barns gone as well as all the cosmetic damage. If you look @ one of the pictures of the house right under our satillite dish that is a cunk of 4x4 post shot into the wall like an arrow. It's looking like all the glass that came into our bedroom has probably distroyed our carpet so will probably be getting new flooring for it as the glass isn't all coming out. It's been a very long 3 days and very exhausting. Still trying to catch up but so much to be done around here. Looks like we're also going to have to cancel going to our last trial in Lincoln, NE for the GSPC of Nebraska weekend trial. Here's most of the shots before we got most picked up. Still have a lot of tree's down and on fences we'll have to go cut up but as said "could of been a whole heck of a lot worse and no one or thing injured."

As long as everone's A-OK, that's a good thing. That's too bad about having to cancel your trip to Lincoln.....hopefully you get everything on your end back in order ASAP and we'll see you next year.

Were the dogs all outside, in those kennels? There had to be puppy pee puddles everywhere, if they were. Thanks goodness no one or thing was hurt. Everything else can be fixed. Best wishes. Denise

Thank god you, the dogs & horses are all OK, glad to hear that!! Must have been scary.
Years ago we had a twister go through where we lived at the time. It just missed our house(we saw it) & demolished my school only a block away, we had to bus to another school for months before it was fixed, amazing the damage they can do in such a short time.

Glad everyone is ok. I've seen 2 tornado's from a fair distance. Never want to see one up close like that. Again, I'm glad everyone and the dogs are ok.

Tornados are scary, I lived thru the one in Omaha in 75. Tore the roof off our house, a block over all were destroyed. MAny dogs had to be put down after. They went nuts, some became very vicious. Glad to hear all came thru OK. Hope you can rebuild and make things just as they were if not better.

Denise~

The front two banks of kennels are in the big building with the south side open to a walkway and the long altogether bank of kennels that are under a lean to that connects off of the big building. Dogs were running loose everywhere by the time we could get out there to inspect the damage (well what we could see between lightening flashes and the flash lights @ 1:30 in the morning. We found 2 curled up tightly together under our stock trialer safe and the last one came in about 3:30 am out of our pasture to the southeast of the house. There were sides also as well as roof on the back runs and then our mesh shade screen was down on the south side of pens as well. This is the 3rd set up kennel/building and they've all worked wonderfully.

We were as someone put it scared spitless and I am sure there were a lot of puppy pee puddles around. Dogs are all settled down today and back to same ole ways. Now when that next storm comes around we'll see what happens know Keith & I will be skittish and nerveous as heck for quite some time. This made 2 floods, and ice storm and a tornado we've been in this spring and we're pretty tired of mother nature and what she's thrown at us all spring. Hopefully things will go smoothly the rest of spring/summer/fall & winter (we can only hope for).

Well still exhausted and ready for bed (this will be the first night back in our bed as just got all the glass (or as much as we could) off of the floor and all the bedding stripped off and changed to new. Not sure I'll sleep well in it for a while either. Night all.

Really glad to hear that no one; people, dogs, horses or stock were seriously hurt or lost. Those are the important things in life, everything else can be rebuilt/replaced.

I'll take our blizzards and floods..... you can keep the winds! After the Supercell that dumped 26+ Tornado's all over Western MD, Eastern WV and Northern VA about 8 years ago, I no longer enjoy T-storms like I used too! I'm real skittish about them now and would be like the mouse who is being watched by the cat if I lived out there where it is a seasonal reality for you folks!
NOPE! Don't like the wind at all!

VERY Scarrey stuff. Guess it does not feel like it but you are blessed it was not worse. When people and animals are involved that is what matters. I went to a horse farm in Ky when I was growing up the week after it was hit, I saw the pictures of scattered horses everywhere, it was awful, they lost 16 horses.

That is terrible, so glad thet guys are all OK, that would include you and Keith. It is amazing what happens in these storms, the 2X4 sticking in the siding near the broken window, the hole in the outbuilding and all the small holes of stuff just going through the siding.

I am so thankful that you are OK, I thank the Lord for your safety.

Are you now putting in a shelter? Just kidding.

WOW! Glad to hear everyone and animals are all right. We get mostly winds here also, nothing like that! Did you notice the wood pile didn't get blown over? I hate stacking wood.

Oh My goodness!! So glad everyone is not hurt! That's scary stuff.

We once had a tornado warning and the tornado was spotted about 1 mile away down our road heading this wayish, but it was dark and I was listening to the radio. I got terrified and brought every dog into the house with us in the main room but the tornado just touched down about 1/2 mile away very briefly (level a strip of trees) and then lifted and broke up. We had very high winds, but nothing so bad as that. I am so glad you are all okay and found all the dogs...

Wanna thank you all for your thoughts and prayers, Keith & I are getting along pretty well. We'll see what happens the next 3 nights we're supposed to have rain (hopefully no big storms) I was nerveous getting to sleep back in our own bed last night and took a while to go to sleep. The guys (some friends of ours that are contractors and builders) were here @ 8 am this morning and roof is almost all redone (stripped down to the plywood and new all the way around). Mowed this morning as well and got to pick up tons of sticks, boards, shingles, glass and tree limbs and twigs. In the house now still doing all the laundry, bedding that was all full of glass. Haven't heard anything back yet from the insurance on whether or not we'll be getting new carpet/or flooring because of all the glass.

Anyway, thanks again and we'll be in touch as to how things are progressing.

Robbi, Just saw this. WOW! That must have been a terrifying ordeal. I’m certainly glad you guys are ok and your home is still in one piece. When visiting you up there, I always wondered about the frequency of tornados, being in KS and all. We were woken up about two weeks ago to tornado sirens going off right behind us, fortunately it was a few miles North of us. Pretty scary stuff. At least we get a little warning if doppler detects them in the area, whereas I doubt they have those out in the rural areas like yours. Hopefully that’s the last one you ever have to see.

Take care.
