Anyone weld up their own kennels. I've looked at costs and can order enough material to make 2 10x10 kennels for the price of 1 prebuilt and bought 10x10 kennel. So I've ordered 1.25in. square tube for the outside and 1in. square tube for the support cross. My question is what type of wire should I use. Cattle/Hog pannels, 4x4 square, 2x4 square, rolled wire? Any ideas or opinions? I have 2 shorthairs. Thanks- Charlie

I would use hog panels as I do now.

The last repair to my kennels and galvanized was to use PVC schedule 40 1 and 1/2 inch. It works great and is easy to work with and with 15 foot panels, stays in place.

Gonna replace the front of the kennel, 4 doors, the same way.

I would reccomend this http://www.okbrandwire.com/horse-panels.htm for your kennels. I ordered mine from Cleaver Supply in Chanute. There are various lengths and widths available. The 4' X 20' 2X4 panels are $54.00 per.

Kmack- That looks about like what I would want. Do you know if they have other distributors closer to me in Topeka. Or would I be able to find something similar around here?

I think Tractor Supply, Atwoods, etc. carry the 5' X 16' panels (special order)but I am building horse fence (pipe posts with top rail) so I wanted the 4' X 20'. I called Tony McDermott who is the sales rep for this area. He gave me the number for Cleaver in Chanute. He didn't give me any other suppliers names.

I just shot him an email, we'll see if there is anyone up this way that carries the 6x20 panels.

Heck I use Cattle panels with welded wire over it and never had a problem. I cut a 16ft cattle panel in half and then attatch the welded wire on it and then my kennel is complete. I only need one panel because I have the dogs in the building so one wall of the kennel is the building and the other wall is the kennel next to it. So for around 40.00 you have an 8x8 kennel. They are cheap and easy to build or tear down if you need. Hope that makes sense.....

I have one out of Rebar and cattle pannels on all 4 sides and the roof....i had to do this because the dog would climb out of a chain link....It took him a week or so to figure it out but he figured out how to climb through one of those squares about 6"x6" squres....i had to wrap chain link on top of it....i should have went with hog panels as they are the really small squares.

That sounds like a good idea. Do any of you have pictures?

I like the looks of those horse panels from OK Brand. The spacing is 2"x4". Is that too big? For those that use welded wire fencing, what spacings do you use? I've seen from 1/2"x1" all the way up to 2"x4" and larger.

2" X 4" is the standard size on Behlen Country and Priefert runs which I have seen. It should work fine.

Now I notice that the horse panels are 4 and 6 gauge wire. Isn't that pretty thick stuff? There's also welded wire fabric in 12.5 gauge. Would that suffice for kennel runs?

I have used the welded wire fabric for other fencing. It will work for dog containment. I prefer the larger gauge welded wire panels as they don't required stretching between the posts and to my taste they have a straighter, cleaner appearance.
