Natural Ability test in rain?

Post by GSPoindexter » Thu May 15, 2008 11:19 am

I'm testing my dog in the NA test this weekend in TN. Will they still run the test if it's raining? Seems like rain would make the test more difficult. Not sure my dog will want to swim in the rain?

The show must go on. The only way to stop it would be lightning. Bring rain gear and tough it out. Good luck!!

The rain will bother the birds in the field portion of the test. Once wet pen raised quail will not fly so good. Some will chill and just sit tight. That is why we started using chuckers for NA test.

My name's Chris and I'll be running Dexter in my avatar.

What part of SC you from? I've got family in Sumter and lived there back in the early 80's as a kid.

I will be there "helping out" since my chapter is the host chapter. It looks like Saturday is going to be perfect----- 60's and sunny all day. There is a slight chance (30 %) of scattered showers on Sunday afternoon. The weather should be great. Good Luck to all!!!!!!! :D

Matt,

I'm running my classically NAVHDA ALL AGE bred Pointer pup from my Guard Rail daughter x Ch. Rock Acre Blackhawk!! His call name is Jack, after his Granddad Guard Rail. I'm predicting this will be the breeding of choice for all future NAVHDA aficionados.

What do you think???

I think you may be onto something there. Better warn the judges, they're probably not used to keeping up with a pup with those kind of wheels  You've got one big problem though....ain't no pointer going get in the water!!!!!

PS Shhh don't tell anybody but, Gent went swimming yesterday AND today... Thought he was going to walk on water he was going so hard after those ducks

The Heartland chapter had 2 EP's NA test at our chapter May 2-4. They both earned Prize 1's; 1 - 112 & 1 - 110.
Hope you have great weather and lots of fun. Don't forget to carry water in the field!

Well, the field work might be a bit tough in the rain (birds won't fly) but, Bill Jensen (Ross might know the name - old school NAVHDA, Griff guy) said he's never seen a dog fail the track in the rain.

As for the pointer...we've had a member running them for years - even put VC's on a couple.

Good luck to all!

I heard about those Pointers earning Prize I's a couple of weeks ago. I told my pup and the pressure is on!! :D

Actually, I have been doing this for so long that I just have fun. Qualified my first EP in 1990 I think and ran my first GSP in 1980. It's just a great time with really great people!!

Look forward to meeting y'all!!

Thanks Brenda, I lost 1 point on the track which had a multiplier of 2 in the total scoring. He ran a perfect track up to the end where it went into a real thick area of briars and honeysuckles, he stopped and pointed. The judges said if he would have took 2-3 steps into the area it would have been a 112 prize 1. Up until about two weeks before the test all my tracking had been on rabbits in preparation for our JGHV testing system. I had a little trouble switching from searching for and pointing birds to tracking them in such a short time.

Yes the bird was in there, he was pointing exactly where it entered the "cover". Possibly along with the other birds from the dogs that ran before me. Ross is running his two pups today.

Mind you I am not a judge and that was my first testing experience with NAVHDA, but from what I was told they wanted him to make the transition from the field to the thick cover area. Maybe if his nose wasnt so good he would have proceeded farther before he pointed.

Brenda,

My GSP pup wasn't feeling well. I almost pulled him but went ahead and ran the little guy. He squeaked out a PIII but just wasn't himself. He is only 4.5 mos. old so I'll run him again.

I knew I didn't have a prayer with my Pointer pup when I discovered that ALL THREE JUDGES AND EVEN THE APPRENTICE WERE SPINONE MEN/WOMEN!!! After the twenty minute search they all just looked at each other in bewilderment!! "What the heck was that!?!?!"

Pointer pup 101 PII. :D

Ross, You want to really mess with those Spinone folks, throw a sweater and gaters on your dog and spray him with a little musty water. Good job.
The best part of training is seeing the light come on in your little prot'eg'e.

Dexter came out with a Prize III, my water work cost him. He was hesitant to get in the water at first but got in twice for them. I thought he would have got a 3 since no dead bird was used. They gave him a 2 for water but 4's for everything else. He did very well in the field and tracking.

p.s. I filled out the perfect pedigree. Will you guys look at it and see if you recognize anyone in his blood? He didn't come from a kennel but seems to have very good bloodlines.

There were a lot of good dogs there this weekend. It is a shame that the weather did not hold up on Sunday. Dexter did great, would have been a prize one if he would have just got in that tiny little pond faster!!!!!

Ross's two dogs looked great. It was exciting to try and watch that little GSP find those birds. The problem was that you couldn't see the little guy because the grass was so tall!!! :D

I hope everyone that come enjoyed thier stay, and we'll see again down the road!!!!!!
