GDF Cribs

Post by grant » Sat May 07, 2005 9:17 am

If you haven’t seen MTV Cribs, it’s a TV show where famous/rich people show you around their home (crib). Anyway, I finally caught pigeons and got my coop built.... I’ll write a post about that later…

So here is Kage and Bell’s GDF Crib section… Please feel free to add the “GDF Cribs” for your pups…

I really like your house and you have given me a great idea for my kennel! I never thought about putting gravel down! I really like your coop too!

Thank ya! It really doesn't smell cause I poop-scoop and wash it down daily. The gravel makes their feet tough. I got that idea from R&B at walnut hill gsps.

When I was showing dogs they werew all kept on gravel to help keep their feet tough and tight. Still the best way to keep them but just more work cleaning.

I sure would like to have more sometime. I went to a wedding tonight and saw an old friend... I found out he lives just down the road and has 2 gsps. He hunts them a good bit too... That was neat...

Nice set up for a backyard Grant. One question. Gravel virus concert. I prefer concert over gravel because some dogs become diggers and will dig there way under and out. As for clean up. You may have to add gravel from time to time but with concert it is a one time deal. Concert will also help to toughen the feet. But the main reason is to try to shovel snow without shoveling half the gravel out with it. Some of you lucky one's don't have that snow worry, but a lot of us do.

Nice set up Grant. My dogs live under the back deck too. Just like yours. They are on Concrete. I have always thought that concrete was better. Now I am wondering if gravel might be the way to go.

We are getting ready to do the landscaping in our yard. We built a house a little over a year ago and it is time. My wife is kicking the dogs out, so I need to build a new place for their runs. I am going to put them back under the cover of the deck for the winter. It keeps them out of the snow.

I am thinking for thier summer home I may just try gravel out for a while. I can always do concrete later. The problem I run into with concrete is that during the day, the dogs pee several times in the kennel. They don't seem to have a specific place they like. Then, they sit in it and swish their tales through it. They always have gross, dirty tails. I wonder if I used gravel and made it 4 to 5 inches deep. Then the pee would go down in the rocks and not stay there for the dogs to wallow in. I may loose some gravel when I clean out the poop. From time to time, I could use some bleach/water solution to clean disinfects the rocks.

Suggestions???

By the way............. How is everyone???? I have been a slacker and haven't been around much.

Seems to me you have a pitch problem if the pee is not running off. I have a 12 dog run on concrete and even when the males lift their leg and the pee goes into the next kennel, because of the pitch it runs right down and I have never experienced a problem. Gravel is alright when new but eventually it starts to smell. Also, concrete is easier to scrub down to disinfect.
One other consideration is to make sure the dogs and kennel get sun. Mainly for the dogs health and also to dry the kennel out.

I started out with pea gravel about 6" of it. It was easy to clean up, great for draining and keep their pads tough. But, then it started getting in the house and was going away with the cleaning up of the poop and after a few winters here, in the spring it was almost gone. So, now I'm going with concrete in the big run and putting gravel in the whelping run.

I still think that gravel would be a good way to go even if you lost some with clean up/snow removal and such. It is a lot cheaper than concrete even if you backfilled it every year. The only concern is also with the digging. I think you could solve that with the railroad ties steaked in the ground they would have to do alot of digging to get out of there!

You mean something like this? :o They didn't get all the way through...and we've since modified it so that it doesn't happen again...luckily, it was to the other kennel and not to the outside!

Now that is cute! Those little guys are really busy Patty.

That old saying, a picture is worth a thousand words really proves our point.

As for going the gravel route being cheaper then concrete? Not in the long run.

Take a look at my gravel. Its big and about 12in. deep. I've never have a problem with digging or smell. That just my exp.... Doesn't concrete make their pads raw?

Here is Bailey's Crib. The enitre yard. We dont have a run for her. If for any reason she needs to be locked up we just put her in the house or in my room.

As you can see she has gravel she can dig at. Which she has just started to feel the need to bury bones in. A pond to drink out of, a hill to run up and down big trees for shade and all the attention she could ever want.

O hahah  no they are not kennels. But the neighbors do have dogs. Umm on the south side they have some sort of spaniel mix. Just a family dog no hunting lines in it. To the north they have a poodle mixed and a collie mix. In this town no one really has those pure bred lines dogs. Only the hunters buy the dogs with lines in them everyone else have the pure bred heinz 57's

I had a gravel dog run when I lived in AK. I thought about the digging issue too so I put chain link down before I put the gravel in. It didn't really cost that much more and It kept them from digging out. As soon as they hit the fencing material they couldn't go any further. Problem solved!

I haven't got a picture of it but the dog pens at mom and dad's are on a 20' x20' concrete slab, each dog has it's own 5' x 20' run and there is a light in each one so we can go out at night and check on them and if we don't have a flashlight then "oh well." We also put in heated water bowls to keep them from freezing in the winter.
All of this is inside of an 80' x 80' fence so we can let one out to run for a few hours and dont have to worry about the dogs getting in the road. Often times My dog will be loose in their for a few days or longer and he has yet to get out after about 2 years, except for the one time I left the gate open, though all he did then was come to see me.
