Intensity is an atribute I desire, and Style is a bi-product of it.. I like intensity.. be it when they are onto the trail of birds, or obviously, when on point.

For example: Intensity in these pups working some planted PR Quailie birds. Image

I don't know what this dog is doing but our dogs have pointed wild ND pheasants in a corn stubble field like that.

For the long tailed dogs, the desired 12 0'clock and straight tail presents problems that are not seen with the docked tail breeds. These problems are tails that are too low or pulled over into sickle tails. The pulled tail is something you may not see until after a year of age. So if your pups look good, don't count on it lasting into maturity. Sometimes the pulled tail is seen only when the birds end up being pointed from too close, which can be common with planted pen raised birds.

This setter illustrates what I mean. This first photo is around 4 months old pointing a woodcock:

Image

Next a planted bird at 9 months:

Image

Doing fine so far. Here is a point on a grouse:

Image

Still not bad, getting corrected for a steadiness problem on a pigeon here:

Image

Here is a real sickle tail when she is almost on top of the planted bird:

Image

Another training photo:

Image

Pulling the tail some:

Image

Pulling some more on a back:

Image

So you can see from this series, sometimes you get a pulled tail, sometimes not, and it can get worse with age. Overall, this setter is not perfect, but she is still pretty classy as far as I am concerned.

I would guess that the dock tailed breeds avoid a lot of grief about the tail style by not having a whole tail. I have even heard that some breeders of long tailed dogs dock a joint or two on the pups to avoid tail style problems or they favor the trait of a naturally short tail. This can make a difference for the trialer, most hunters could care less as long as they get a nice intense point.

I've heard of lots of things. I've heard of cutting tissue or muscle underneath so a dog is able to crank the tail up better. I've heard the pros and cons of tail docking. If the docked tail is left too long you'll see a short sickle near the end of the tail on some dogs. A number of traits are seen as stylish just because they're less common and not seen in the majority of dogs of a breed.

Here's a pup from my last litter that I 'rescued' from it's owner. She was sick, weighed 32 lbs at almost a year of age, and was all skin and bones when I got my hands on her. 12 days worth of meds at $0.29 a tablet got her back on her feet and the first time I cut her loose she went nearly 300 yds through heavy cover to the fencerow... I can't understand some people... I also can't find a thing wrong with this pup - been shooting wild birds over her this fall, no problem.

Thanks for the compliment guys, he's turned out to be a keeper.

He will throw every tail under the sun....but he seems to pull his tail like that on birds he hits hard, 60 to zero in an instant.
You can see in that shot the fuzz is up on his tail...he had this bird nailed , phez layed down flat the dog came on him so fast.
Love watching a smart dog slice up a big field in short order ......

Thanks, she's turning out to be a nice little pup. Shame the guy that had her couldn't be bothered to provide her decent care. Yes, she's one of the Lindy x Bullett pups from last year - I've only had her since September and in only three trials, have already gotten Puppy & Derby placements on her, she's gonna be really fun this spring!

Tommy,

That one picture of the two dogs, tails almost straight back, leaning way forward reminds me of an old painting of two pointing setters that sat on the wall in my grandfather's log cabin at the lake. I don't know how old the painting was but I remember seeing it back in the late 50's & early 60's. Brings back memories!

All of those pics were taken while the dogs were pointing wild birds. Some of the pics were hunting and some off season training pics. The one you guys are talking about was an off season training pic and just when I clicked the shutter button on my old camera which had about a 2 second delay the covey of blue quail busted and the dogs busted as well. That pic is actually of them on their first lunge on the bust of the covey rather than on point but it still looks pretty cool I think.

Well here is my pride and joy. She is 5 years old Pointer, was the runt in the litter and has a bent tail from being pushed against the mothers womb. Not a show winner, but I would put here up against the best in the field! We always limit out and she works like there is no tomorrow. Oh, and don't even think about telling my 10 year daughter that she is not the greatest dog on earth!
