pigeons want to walk around
pigeons want to walk around
Well i have 3 left out of 8 after their first flight...what a success rate! anyway i set a cage up and started placing these 3 out side the bobs and making them come through to get their food...they have that down pat...so yesterday i let them out again the fly out with the bobs up but then they just hop down to the ground and peck at the dirt and walk around. Then i have to open the door and chase them back in becuase they don't want to fly back in i think they were going to sleep out side? Should i take them out and go out a little ways from the coop and throw them up and let them take off?

When starting a new coop it's best to keep them all inside until they have paired up and nested, even more guarantee if you wait till they lay eggs.
Then for the first week or so only let half out at a time.
Once they are paired and raising thoug they'll fight to get back in. CR

Luke,
They will fly back to your landing area and go in through the bobs if they have already gone through them. They are probably on the ground looking for grit if you aren't giving them any. What CR is telling you is good if you get older birds. But yours are already out and coming back. They will go back in when it gets dark or when they are fed if you have a board for them to land on before walking through the bobs.

It's not how many breaths you have taken but how many times it has been taken away!
Has anyone noticed common sense isn't very common anymore.

PIgeon walking around pecking at the ground is very normal if they are left outside to do what they want. I have 2 kinds of grit in my flight loft and my birds love to eat off the ground I believe they are looking for trace minerals and stuff they might not get in the grit.

Brenda,
I hope to have my loft nearly complete this weekend, far enough along to hold birds anyway. What would you want for a couple breeding pairs and some young birds?
