Dog box question.....

Post by luke0927 » Mon Jun 30, 2008 7:01 am

OK i have a tacoma 4x4 which is great right now on with gas but leaves me limited on room....I need to get a new dog box.....3 hole would be nice but i think 2 might be all i could fit if I did it this way or bought one....do they make a dog box that fits into the reciever hitch? Not one pulled on axles but one that is welded to one of those racks that then can slide in a reciver hitch....I have thought about trying to make one if i could not find one for a good price? This would save me a lot of room in the bed of my truck.

I have seen them on the backs of SUVS so I know they make them. I would be very hesitant to use one though just because if you ever get rear ended, your dog is in big trouble. I know they make some two hole boxes that will fit in the back of smaller pickups but you would be hard pressed to try and get a three hole. I would not do the thing with the hitch. Im getting chills just thinking about it.

Yeah, I gotta admit I'm with Romeo on this one. I wouldn't feel comfortable putting my dogs back on the hitch... security and safety issues come to mind.

I did the hitch thing for a short time with a jeep I used to have.I had reflective tape on it but I was still real nervous.Don't think I'll ever do that again.

the rear ending thing also crossed my mind....if i could get one of the smaller ones with top storage that would probably be OK.

You can get a custom box made by about any of the manufacturers out there that will do just what you are looking for if you decide to go with a slide in box. What I'd suggest unless your dogs tend to fight when riding together is make it a two hole. Fewer dividers means you can carry more dogs.

I have one made for a full sized truck that's something of a T. Full width of the bed at the back in, then extends between the wheel wells where it is narrower. I can get three full grown GSP's into each side. CR
There's a reason I like dogs better'n people

I had a 3 hole made for a van I had, but there is room between the metal, so needs a cover on it. It is metal and kinda heavy, but I would sell it. Holes are a little narrow, but dog can stand. I carried dogs all over the country in it tho. I would sell it for 350.
