Keeping dog in heat safe

Post by romeo212000 » Sun Aug 31, 2008 2:42 pm

I think my GSP is starting her first heat. I havent noticed any blood but her genitals look like the are starting to swell. I was hoping you guys could tell me whether the kennel set up I have is good enough to keep other dogs from doing their thing. My back yard is basically open and I live in a somewhat suburban area. There is only 2 dogs around that I am aware of and Im not sure of their gender. Her kennel is 10x10 chainlink 6 ft tall. I have a padlock on the gate and one of those black canvas roofs zip tied at the top, more for shade than anything, but I am hoping it will keep anything that wants to climb out. Anything else I should be doing or am I okay?

I keep mine out in a run all day but usually bring them in and crate them at night. I have never had a dog around when she is in heat but if you have some it would be good insurance to just crate her at night if you could.

Get a lead box and put her in it for a month! If you dont have any males around you sound like you should be alright. If you have males I would put tin 3 Ft high all around the kennel so you dont run the risk of a through the fence mating.

Is that possible? I would think a dog would have to have double jointed hips to manage that. Not to mention excellent aim.

my male tore right thru a chain link kennel then hers to get in. Now if I want her to not be bred I keep her in and only let her out when I have the boys locked in the behlen magnum welded wire kennel which they cant get out of. They go nuts when the scent is in the air.

Don't believe it is possible but there are always stories going around. I've had dogs kenneled next to each other many many times with Chain link or 2X4 welded wire and there was no way they could get close to each other.

They will climb sometimes though.

Romeo,

I am a breeder and I had a bad experiece this spring. My best female came in and we have a "tank Proof" so to speak kennel. My dad is a welder, so everything is built to withstand galeforce winds, bombing runs by the solviets, and being run over by our dozer. haha. Anyways, despite all of this we have dirt floors in our kennels (I hate it, but that's what I have for now) The neighbors dog (who runs at large) dug into the pen, bred my female, and I had to give her meds to abort the pregnacy. A costly deal considering what that litter would have produced. I knew there was no since in charging over to the neighbors looking for compensation, so runabout poochy met 7mag. SO.. if you have dirt floors I suggest laying down pigwire and wiring it to the bottom of the kennel. Cover it with some topsoil, pack it, and you're set. My dad used to raise coonhounds and said it worked great.. IT DOES. If you have concrete floors, even better.

My little lady went into her first heat cycle a few days ago and she seems to be in pain. Is this normal? She will not come out of her house and just looks pathetic. :( If this is normal for first heat cycles is there anything I can do to help her through this. It is a bit sad to see her like this. Thanks for the help. Amazing how dogs turn you into mush.

Never had that experience with any of mine.. I have contacted my vet many a time over what I thought was a stupid question after she explained things to me, but I never lay chance to something with our animals health. Call your vet just to check it out.

Women get cramps when they have their period so why not dogs? Yes my kennel does have concrete floors so that is a huge plus. As long as they cannot climb the fence and chew through the roof I think she should be okay. I have not noticed any other dogs around so that is a very good thing. My dog is acting a little under the weather as well. She is spending a lot more time just laying down. Usually she lays down but has her head up looking around. Lately she has just been laying it down. She will be fine though. She was still excited to see me today.

Thats good to hear.. Throw her a rawhide and pour some HB grease on her dogfood. That'll lift her spirits!
