I get them for free from Wolf Creek Neculear Powerplant. They use them for storing hazerdous waste until it is recycled. My brother works there and he brings them home for me. Not sure if they have anything to do with it, but I had a brood matron whelp 20 pups in one litter and they were fully matured in 10 days! JK

Actually, check with your local car washes, many of them get their liquid soap in them from their vendors. They will usually be happy to sell em to you for 10 bucks or so.

I get mine from a gut who's company buys soap in them. They give them away for personal use.
In Wichita, there is a Coke Bottling plant where you can get them. or another good place is to talk to the owner of a carwash.

The Yard Store in Wichita sells the 55 gal. drums for $12. and a local car wash sells the 30 gal. drums for $5. The Yard always tries to keep several in stock.

Bulk antifreeze (ethylene glycol) is also shipped in plastic barrels so wherever you purchase them I strongly recommend that they be powerwashed with soap before using around dogs.

I agree with Kmack-go to your local bottling plant. Tell them what you would be using them for and they will most likely give them to you. I just got a couple from the Coke plant here in town and they were fine with it.

If that question refers to making a barrel johnny house for quail there's at least some pictures and info here: http://www.uplandbirddog.com/dogcamp/recall3.html If your looking to make something else (dog house?) I think that's been discussed on the site before.

There is no secret to making them into a house. Cut one end with a hole that is big enough for your dog to enter. I then cut a pallet in half and screw the barrel down to the pallet so it stays put. Put some straw in there for bedding and whalla!

Haven't read the entire thread but it might help others if some of you nice folks would post pictures of how you make you openings on your barrels. Me personally I just cut a half hole out so when the dog gets out he doesn't drag all his straw out.

I get my barrels from my local Culligan water guy. $5 each. I also cut them out about 2/3 of the way up to help keep the bedding in the barrel.

That bar over the door is where at one time I had a cover over the door. Dogs didn't seem to care for it. I thought about putting an artic entry on it but the wind always comes from the back and the dogs spend the majority of the time in the house, spoiled! It is screwed down at the sides on both sides to keep it still.

I like how you put a top on it. My dogs love to jump and nap on top of their houses. Will post pics of my barrels soon.

We get our barrels from a place in McPherson, can't think of the name of it offhand (it's on the west side of town I believe and they have all different sizes). Make sure no matter what comes in the barrels you always powerwash out very well.

As far as making a dog house out of it, Keith cuts @ least or almost half of the top out , then for the legs uses 1" pvc pipe and elbows and makes the legs/stands and we have a heavy S hook that keeps the back up off the ground that is attached to the panel of the kennel. Very quick & easy for sure.

If I can find the name of the place will repost what it is.

Would you use the plywood end for the door end or just as a cover and cut out of the other side? I did this but am unsure which end to make the door out of.

I think I would put the door in the plywood then when they chew it up you can just replace it but really don't matter, just a matter of choice.
