charged

Post by naperdog » Mon Nov 10, 2008 9:03 am

I live in suburbia, IL. The town i live in and the surronding areas have been around for decades. Every morning before work i take my 5 month lab (Kona) to a large open park near my house. On our morning walks we just play some ball and run up and down a hill in the large open area (about 4football fields large). on weekend afternoons the park has a big pond and some cover, next to the open area, i use for retreiving practice. I have seen coyotes run through park before (always right as the sun is coming up), but this time a pack of 3 of them came close. One coyote decided to break from the pack and kept creeping closer and closer to Kona and I. Yelling and waving my arms did nothing to deter him. When he got within 50 yards he started a charge right at us. When he got within 25 yards I threw Kona's ball at him which was luckily enough to send him back off into the cover.

For some of you, this might now be too out of the ordinary, but for a suburbanite like me, this was a very unique experiance!

Wow that's pretty scary. I have heard a lot of reports about them in Maryland, right across the river from me a couple miles away. And I think I've seen one in my own yard at night. But I'm a little farther out, I wouldn't call it the suburbs. People have 1 to 3 acres, and there are larger plots and farms mixed in.

Illinois is like the most gun unfriendly state in the union, but I'd shoot a coyote who was threatening my dog where I am. Can't really do that where you are in suburbia. But that's pretty scary.

By the way, the reports I hear from nearby are that the coyotes are killing cats, foxes and ducks and geese. No dogs. But a pack of three or more coyotes certainly seems like a serious dog threat.

Actually, on the last ballot 14 Illinois counties had a question to advise the State Legislature on whether or not to propose/adopt legislation that would allow concealed carry. 10 of the 14 counties passed it. We'll see where that gets us from here.

I would recommend carrying one of these and burying it the coyotes head if it goes near your dog again.

If the coyote gets close enough to use that thing, you got one sick coyote and your more than likely in trouble. You'd be better off with pepper spray.

Well I wish you luck. But with the amount of pull Chicago has over the state, I'd say you have an uphill battle. Near me in DC, the Supreme Court overturned the gun ban and the city still doesn't seem to have any interest in complying - changing the rules, not granting permits for semi-auto pistols, crap like that.

That is very bad "bleep", i wonder if i can get away with carrying one where i live. Don, I have no question in my mind this coyote would have gotten close enough to use this. He was at a dead run and around 25 yards when i threw the ball at him. I was absolutly shocked that the ball actually worked, as soon as i realeased the ball i got ready to use the log that i was carrying with me in case something like this happened. I fully expected to have to use that log and couldn't beleive it when he turned and ran.

I am definately bringing a better weapon with me tomorrow! Pepper spray, battle ax, whatever I can!

Don't get the puny human pepper spray stuff. Not enough range. Get the stuff they sell for bears. You'll get much better stand-off.

I keep meaning to have a hatchet like that made, but with a circular cross-section spike on the back side. I use a hanging stand quite a bit and that would be a much better step starter than what I use now.

You could also try a slingshot. Pretty easy to conceal and it won't make any noise when you fire.

Thank goodness I live in S. Carolina! We are allowed to have concealed weapons permits!

I've had my Brits jump and chase seveal yotes out of the area over the years and have never found them to be much of a problem. They are fairly small and timid unless you find a coydog which can be larger. It seems that as we are getting more of them around they are getting a little bolder when in a pack. But I agree with Don, if one gets close enough to use a hatchet then you have a yote with a serious problem, probably going to be rabid. We have them around all of the time and can hear them many nights and see one practically every time I go deer hunting. Even see them here in the backyard occasionally but I never have the rifle when I need it. I have shot a couple while deer hunting but have let a few go to when I thought there was deer close by.

i haven't seen too many coyotes in my life, but i have to say these are the biggest i have ever seen. I am going to be making a few phone calls this afternoon to report the incident. I have seen numerous individuals with small dogs in the same park that would not have been able to stand up to a coyote.

Just as a reminder, but the chances are the charge was bluff and it was trying to get your dog to run. A single yote is not much of an opponent for you or your dog but if he could get the dog to run then the three could chase and nip and cause your dog some real problems.

A couple of years ago I saw one coming towards me from upwind so I stood real still leaning against a tree and it came by me within two feet at most but you should have seen it explode when he got past me and was on the downwind side. My son who was sitting on the ground a couple of hundred yards away over the top of the ridge said it was just a blur when it went by him on the dead run.

that makes sense too me. i was awful surprised by this charge and that can explain it. I had my dog short leashed, but he was glued to my leg growling the whole time.

My friend who sees them regularly has a neighbor who has shot three, but he has to do it from the window of his house. He can't set foot outside and have them stay in range, so the ones around here seem to be skiddish.

They also don't seem to get hit by cars. Does this mean they're smart?

I hear you naperdog. Almost lost a young setter to the coyotes myself. I'm nervous everytime I take an under 30 pound dog out.
There won't ever be any "concealed carry" in Ontario Canada so I carry my starter pistol and a knife . If it came to losing my dog I actually think I would use it.

Sharon....Im sure you would use it....I carry an arsenal when I'm out and if a coyote went after my dog there would be nothing left.

you got that feeling too huhhh.....

Here in GA they are usually very skidish i usually kill a couple a year they are very smart....i don't live in the city but you do here on the news about them getting domesticated animals...if one was anxious to charge with a human present that means they are used to humans....

I had one try to attack my turkey decoy spring before last. A SBE II with a 3 1/2 inch Winchester Supreme #6 will do a number on them at 20 yards. :!:
