upland books

Post by up-hunter » Tue Dec 16, 2008 4:33 pm

I was wondering what books you guys consider must read for the upland hunter and bird dog enthusiest. I figured i should be reading some more and figured this would be the right subject.

I've always heard spiller and gene hill wrote some good books.

any suggestions would be great.

This year I read Burton Spiller's Grouse Feathers, More Grouse Feathers, and Grouse Feathers Again. Very pleasurable reading and you will learn a lot about grouse hunting. I read another book called something like Greatest Dog Stories or something to that effect which was also very enjoyable. Teddy Roosevelt wrote a MAMMOTH book on hunting, and there are good sections on upland birds out West and an interesting section on Grizzly hunting.

Gun Dog, by Richard Wolters (useful)
Best way to train your gun dog, by Delmar Smith (entertaining)
A rough shooting dog, by Charles Fergus (spaniel, but I'll forgive just this once)
A comfortable range, by Jim McDermott (great setter story)
Encyclopedia of North American Sporting Dogs, by Steve Smith (wife loves this one, but pup ate it)
The california quail, by A. Starker Leopold
The Orvis Wingshooting Handbook (extremely useful!)
Shotgunning: The art and science, by Bob Brister

I don't know if these are "must reads," but I enjoyed them.

My favorite bird hunting writer is by far Havilah Babcock. He hunted in a time when the birds were plentifull and life was simpler, and had a way with mixing in humor better than any of the other writers in my opinion.

Lvrgsp,

Yes, I have "Cov." I trained for Leon (Cov) Covington at Caddo, OK and Mortlach, Saskatchewan back in the '60's. He was quite a character and story teller. Some folks may remember his 1955 National Champion and Hall of Fame Dog, Lone Survivor.

Other major circuit bird dog trainers that wrote books that I own are...

Reflections on Bird Dogs and the Men Who Handled Them, Ed Mack Farrior

Bird Dogs and Field Trials, Jack Harper

Home of Champions, Dave Grubb

The White Knight Story, Hoyle Eaton

then there are the out of print, rare or vintage training pointing dog titles. We'll save those for later.

Right now I'm reading "Against the Wind" by Roy Pool, excellent so far. Recent reads are: "The Bobwhite Quail Book", "The Tattered Autumn Sky", and "Grouse and Lesser Gods". All great reads and I would suggest them all.

Gene Hill wrote some good books..... now there is an understatement. Hill, Wolters, Tarrant, Huggler, Davis (Tom and Henry P) Ben Williams, Jerome Robinson just to name a few. The next best thing to being there is readsing about it. Happy reading.
