ever had hunting success with a rescue?

I’m working with a rescue right now (that I did get for free) so this thread was interesting. I had planned to buy a pup this last spring but my second daughter delayed things and the opportunity for my current dog came along. So far he has been great, but even if he doesn’t work out as a hunting dog he’ll be a great family dog.

This guy had a rough go of it in his first couple years of life, not a good fit for a rookie birddog family. We ironed out most of the issues and he has been finding and pointing birds for me ever since. He is 100% attached to his people. Would I go out and intentionally find a rescue in hopes of turning it in to a bird dog? Heck no!!! But, I have also seen some pretty nice dogs that needed a home.

I know I have posted this one before, but it’s the only one I have on my phone.

Yup, He has some quirks and can be a real pain in the butt. But don’t we all!

My wife reminded me tonight how he ended up staying, he didn’t have a tag and animal control stopped by my buddy’s place. They got called to the property next door and decided to pay a little visit when they saw all the kennels. Instead of paying the ticket, he told them it wasn’t his dog and dropped him off at my place “until the heat was off”.

When ever I read into this thread I can't help but remember when I got my first shorthair in 1997 there was a gentleman who was friends with the man who introduced me to the world of birddogs. That man had a brittney he had gotten from a friends wife after the friend had passed away if I remember correctly. He could not believe the cost of dog's and told me that the most he ever paid for a dog was 15.00 dollars and my friend later told me that this man got most of his dogs for free from folks unable to keep or rescues . My friend claimed this man was a very good dog man and hunted these dogs regularly . Old school guy with a wife and kids . Died last year at 85 ? I think ?

That is an amazing Chukar haul. I assume wild birds. Nice going. Wish I was 40 years younger.

It ain’t getting any easier. Keeping the weight down and the legs moving so I can hopefully keep after them like you have been able to. You are an inspiration my friend!
