I bet the Tracy's,Eisenhart and Kinkelaar is there.Maybe that's really why some of the pros didn't go? Hard to beat the odds when they are running especially with the number of good dogs they have in their strings.In any trial.One of them will win it.

The Tracys always make up the pretty big percentage in trials they run.Then there's Eisenhart and Kinkelaar behind them.Between the T's,Eisenhart and Kinkelaar they have 38 dogs in it.It has to be like spitting in the wind to the handlers with only a dog or two.If I trialed and even had a good dog I wouldn't even waste my time,effort and expense being there.But hats off and respect to the ones who beleive in their dogs and think they have a legitimate shot at it.And we all have to have hopes and dreams.It'll take a dog that SHINES in All Directions and Outshines this pack and their 38 dogs. And a fair share of their dogs have already won Championships.But my post Congrats to the one who does it if it happens.

Nope not here,,,,, I don't have a dog entered,,,, pretty hard for us guys out west to go back there and compete. I don't think we even have one qualified to run this year.

The first thing I see, is that Eisenhart isn't there, so it basically the Tracy's vs Kinkelaar.

And secondly, I see that Jerry Hailey is there, but isn't running his "Buddy" dog that won it last year? He is running his Stockbroker dog though?

Mike Tracy has alot of dogs there this year, and alot of good dogs too. He has a pretty good string this season.

That's the point that they are making. Luke, for instnace, had ten (10) dogs qualified ....and no show?? Seems odd.

Jason Williams didnt qualify any thing, Hester had belfield silver , Luke I had several qualified.

I believe the point is that with about 140 dogs qualifying only 39 are running. Those dogs selected, ran and qualified in Purina Points Qualifying trials and they are no shows... That isn't a bit strange to you? Do you know how many dogs ran last year?

Can you answer without 37 exclamation points?

Could it be time to visit starting a rotating trial each year or find something that is a little more centrally located for all the pros that want to make the trip. My thought that the economy could also be a factor playing into more limited traveling attendance as well.

Going back to the chance of showing up with one dog and being agains the odds, wouldn't it be great if Johnny showed up with his ole grouse dog (Chasehill Little Bud) and made some noise. Wouldn't the HB people love that

To answer your question, no ,I dont think it is strange, The dogs that are qualifed come from all parts of the country and in many cases are not willing to travel the distance required to participate. Iam sure that the economic conditions play a small part in the lower entries. Some folks probably dont participate because the grounds that they run on are significantly different than the grounds at Hoffman. There are lots of reasons why folks chose not participate including maybe they didnt care for the judging panel. I dont believe the size of the stake diminishes the quality. For the record i dont believe the south is the only place in this country that a major shooting dog event needs to be held. A national event ought to be moved to a more central location or be occassionaly be rotated

I did hear that when they announced the judges some of the pro's were not happy and they thought it was best to sit this one out. Now after saying that,,, and having some understanding on how political and how the "good ol' boys" work in the South,,,, it does make me wonder why they never try to pull judges from out here in the West. Now granted the West is always looked at a red-headed step child,,, but IMO we have nice dogs and alot of them can go anywhere in the country and be competitive. If we don't have nice dogs there is still alot of top quality Am. that know a nice dog when they see one.

From what I read, the NOSC isn't as prestigeous as the all age National at Ames. I think "The Big One" everyone wants to win is the Masters, well it use to be.

That would be a dream to go see some of the guys I read about handle some of these legendary shooting dogs of our time, no bs. I remember when Billy Wayne Morton came to judge the Western Shooting Dog Championship with Dr. somebody (name escapes me). It was great to meet some of the guys you read so much about in the Field. I'm going to the AZ Shooting Dog Championship on Friday to ride some braces and see some of the new western talent roll on. I hope to have some photos to post on Monday.

The KY open was won by, A Tarheel Passion.

The TN Open was won by Gypsy's Elhew Hanna. Last year CoverGirl got her first championship there.

I thought I read some where taht this stake was an hour and half but seen that no dogs had stayed on the ground for longer than and hour 20 minutes. Can someone explain this to me? Just like Vagas's dog sayed her had an impressive run and was picked up at 1:15 why??

This is because the handlers know that the dog is not beating the top performance so far. They had two real good performances in the first brace so it will take a good one to beat them.

What Bill is saying is out of respect for the Judges and other competitors time; they pick the dog up because it has no chance of placing. Covergirl and Talisman have set the bar high.

There are a million reasons to pick up the dog, birdwork, bad race, not handling well, etc. No point in continuing if your dog takes a step on a bird or has an uproductive.

Have you seen the new chaps with a bird pocket on the inside of the right leg. As you're kicking around, you simply pull the release string and out pops the bird. They're great for those unproductive situations. Can save you in a close trial.

IMO,,,,, when we read stuff put on the computer like a "day by day" blow of what is going on in a trial,,,,, the reporters are pretty kind. Why shouldn't they be of course. But when you read picked up with less than 15 minutes to go,,,,, I would bet there was some kind of infraction that took place.

I have heard at Ames especially after an ice storm or extreme weather,,,, sometimes a dog just plain is done and can't make it another 5 minutes. And I also think every dog there should and deserves a certain amount of respect so why embarrass him after he has given all he has to give.

Actually, in talking with Shawn, Ben had a real big forward-going race and a really good find but with only 15 minutes left he could not have had enough bird work to catch the leader. There were no infractions at pick up. Shawn was very pleased with his performance.

As for the other dogs being picked up, I heard it was either because of two unproductives or not enough opportunity for bird work in the time remaining.

R-Heaton: I agree with you in some instances, but from what I have heard, that is not the case in this trial thus far.

That's crazy two inches of snow and 22 degrees !!

Do they release birds for each brace or do they release the all birds before the trail ?

Hopefully for each brace or the birds will have a tough time surviving the storm........

IMO Couldnt a dog find a few more birds in 15 minutes ? i think that is alot of time left to do something impressive, seems to me like your kind of giving up on your dog if you pick him up when you start thinking i cant win. Im sure people like to keep things rolling along and some handlers have many dogs to run but i figure that dog earned his 90 minutes and the owner is paying for 90 minutes..so let it run, that dog may just pull something out of his hat.
