Looking for Brittany references - NC, South, East Coast

Post by WDGS » Thu Feb 05, 2009 9:50 pm

I am long time lurker to this site...glad to finally post.

I've been waiting for the right time, and I finally have the opportunity to get a gun dog after a long absense. I have experience with brittanys, and have always enjoyed hunting over them and working with them. I am a lifelong woodcock hunter, and I want a dog to primarily use for 'doodles, as well as quail, etc. I am very fortunate to live in an area that gives me incredible access to great hunting just minutes from my house, and I have put off getting a bird dog for too long.

However, I live in eastern North Carolina and we have very little upland bird hunting culture (and zero woodcock hunters other than myself)...and I been unable to find many breeders or trainers with schools/kennels. What I would ideally like to do is find a kennel/breeder with whom I can have start a dog and work with them or even purchase a young started dog so that I have a good training foundation that i can build upon and possibly work with a local trainer (if i can find one). I am willing to travel but am leary about being too far away from the original breeder/trainer. Thoughts?

I would appreciate any advice or referrels that anyone can give.

Welcome aboard. There are alot of greast people here and the amount of information you can get is amazing. I am sure you will enjoy yourself. Where in eastern Carolina are you. I am in Jacksonville when I am home. I should be getting home in a few weeks and then it is back to playing with the dogs. I know where there is some decent woodcock cover both on Camp Lejeune and in the surrounding area.
Anyway welcome to the forum and look forwarf to hearing from you. If you are willing to drive a little bit there is a breeder in Goldsboro. The kennel ges by Ed's Brittanied. A friend of mine has a few of his dogs and they are preety good. I don't have info, sorry abut that. He always advertises in Gun Dog Magazine. Any one that comes with a recommendation from Knine is the way to go in my opinion.
Take care and see you around.

Bobbie Sigmund is also in NC. She does a little bit of everything with her dogs and I'm sure that she would help you out.

Tom and Judy Tighe would be the people I'd called in that area. They've been in Brittanys for a lifetime, Judy is in the ABC Hall of Fame, and they are avid field trialers who have the occasional litter.

The Tighe's son (Doug) owns a kennel in NJ. http://www.hopeskennels.com 908-459-5380

He'll be able to put you in touch with his parents.
