Raising Quail For Training/Hunting

I was thinking about building a Johnny House and letting some quail out. I would use them for training my dog and then probably shoot some when the season comes back around.

My question is...in Texas a commercial breeder has to have a license. The statute says "No person may possess game birds in captivity for the purpose of propagation or sale or sell game bird eggs without first acquiring the proper license authorized to be issued under this chapter."

Is there anyone here that knows specifically about Texas regualtions on this? I would never sell them....just want to have some birds around to train and hunt a little. Would I need a license (other than a hunting license of course) or anything else to do this?

THanks...any help would be appreciated.

If the regulation says "commercial" and you're simply using them for personal gain, I would say no. However, the best thing to do is call the local Biologist at Texas Fish & Wildlife, get their interpretation, then make one last call to a local Game Warden, get their interpretation...and then do whatever the game warden says.

I do not know specifically the ins and outs of the Texas game code.

However, I would say if you are going to raise quail for release into the wild, the state will want to keep track of all growers and insist on a certain level of responsibility by the grower to assure that things like unexplained die offs do not go unreported. There is most likely a umber of birds, above which you must do something.

The only other thing you can probably do is buy quail from a licensed grower and keep the reciept in a safe place.

No, you do not need a licence to have Johnny house with a small amout of quail. As long as you are not breeding or selling the birds. It says somewhere it needs to be a small amount but I can't find the quote anymore and am not sure what a small amount is. I usually have anywhere from one to two dozen and I know that is ok according to the game warden I talked to three years ago.

I raise quail for sale and to for personal use in Kansas. You have to have a license here also but it is 12.50, and believe me I made more than that this year off of them. Check with your local biologist, thats the best place to find details.
