Gent Hit By A Car

Post by BoJack » Sat May 09, 2009 8:12 am

Just learened this morning on another board that Ross's Gent was hit by a car while running at Lost Pond trial yeaterday.
I'm cross posting Ross's post.Let's all hope Gent pulls through.

Gent was hit by a car yesterday at the Lost Pond FT while running in the OSD. It doesn't look great for him. He was transferred to Cornell Univ. yesterday afternoon. He is in much worse condition than we were led to believe from the vet in Norwich, NY. He's in critical condition and barely holding on. Severe lung damage. In a best case scenario he will completely recover, however many other outcomes could occur including death. He may also lose a lung. We're moving forward to try to save him...

Prayers appreciated if you are so inclined.

R.

Just got off the phone with the Doctor at Cornell. Surgey to place tube went well last night. He is up and moving around and breathing stable so the tubes are working. Still in intensive care for the next day or two.If the lungs heal on their own the outcome looks good if not iffy.

Best wishes for a full recovery.I know his daddy was a tough ole boy recovering from that bad rattlesnake bite a while back.I'm sure Gent is just as tough.

Here is todays update from ross on the vdog site.. Thank you every one for your prayers (they are working). He is not out of the woods yet but has come a long way....
J

This morning's report is very good. No signs of infection. He is up and standing so they have removed some of the monitoring equipment and they are cutting back on the pain meds. He ate well again. Tomorrow, the surgeons will make a decision on whether they need to go back in or not. If he continues to improve he'll be out in 5 or 6 days... Not out of the woods yet but looking better.

The prayers are working, thank you!

Just spoke with Matt and things are looking good for Gent!

Note from Matt: Gent is coming home Thursday, and I'm going to pick him up Friday. 4 weeks of rest, but the Vet says he should make a 100% recovery
gotta run, but thought I would share the good news!

Matt - I hope you don't mind that I shared the great news! :)

Don't ever underestimate the healing power and tenacity of a bird dog! It is wonderful to hear of his excellent progress. Our Willow was hit by a car at age 8 mos - but it sounds like your boy's injuries were much more extensive. For us, Willow's rear leg was mangled and the vet rebuilt it with wire mesh and 100s of stitches. She's been missing tendons since that day. She's now 7 yrs old and is an FC, AFC and MH and has placed at national events three times. The day it happened the vet said he didn't think she would ever put that leg down on the ground again and put weight on it. Willow apparently wasn't listening. I predict Gent will amaze you and all the vets and staff. Prayers to you.

Jean

Ross's message on vdog. Gent got home last night......

Gent's home!! We sent a driver north this morning and Rizz1's dad picked up Gent from Cornell and headed south. They met half way and our driver just got home and dropped him off!! Thank you Kyle and Mr. Rizzo!

He looks thin, but happy!! ...almost as happy as me!

Should make a complete recovery...

Gent is now home with me recovering. I picked him up from Echo this afternoon. He seems to be in good spirits and was excited to be home! I just wanted to say thanks to everyone for the support and prayers, and also to the whole Echo Plantation/Caladen Kennels crew. Without yall (especially you Scott), Gent may not be here today.....yall are a class act!

Snapped a few pics of the guy w/ my cell phone on the way home....

Taking a look at his home away from home while departing ...

Didn't take him long to make himself comfortable in the truck...

Glad to hear you got her back Scott! And Gent's been the same way, he isn't shy about getting on the couch...not one little bit! I'm loving laying around w/ him though and I think he's enjoying the VIP treatment (Maggie and Jax are a little jealous I think as they are out in the kennel, haha).

UPDATE:
Just took Gent to the Vet to get his sutures removed and checked on. Vet said he was healing well. They drained a small amount of serum from one of the incisions, but he said it wasn't a big deal just to keep an eye on it. He removed about 1/2 the sutures and told me to take the other 1/2 out in 3-4 days. He's doing well and in good spirits.
