Best way to keep dogs off couch?
Best way to keep dogs off couch?
What in your opinion is the best way to keep a dog off a couch? We got a new couch and the dogs are no longer allowed up with us.
They are fine when we are on the couch but as soon as we leave the house they jump up. I have been flipping up the cushions but that is a pain.
I have seen those scat mats. Do they work?

mouse traps
Re: Best way to keep dogs off couch?
I hope your kidding about the mouse traps. I say that because I was in the vets office a few months ago when a GSP was brought in with dead toes. The owner thought mouse traps would work for the counter and couch. However when he come home, the traps had cut off all circulation and the toes and partial paws had to be taken off. Not so great idea.

My Dad used to use mouse traps on the counter with our lab.
But to tell you the truth my Viz is just too darn smart. She she will notice there are no mouse traps on the couch she will just jump right up.
I need something that will trigger a air horn every time they jump on it

Sounds like maybe you already did a good job of training them to get up on a couch in the first place. The best way to keep them off of the furniture is to never let them on in the first place. At home the dogs are not allowed on the furniture. At hunting camp they are and my dogs know the difference. Around me they are never allowed in our bed. My two youngest let them jump up in bed with them and again the dogs know the difference. Through lots of repetition they know get down means all four legs must be standing on the floor.
However, the first issue is that it sounds like you haven't fully established dominance with the dogs and they don't respect you. Secondly at this point the dogs may never be fully re-trained to stay off of the couch when you are not home.
A couple of ideas: You can place a place a new (clean) plastic runner upside down (with the plastic points up) both to protect the couch and make it uncomfortable for the dogs. Place a few comfort beds (doggie beds) on the floor where the dogs can see you while you are in the house. Train them to use their own beds by directing them to the beds and rewarding them where they are on one. Provide a separate safe area for them to be in while you are gone or crate them.

Try using onesided sticky paper on the couch. Dogs had to have things stuck to them.
That, or use the dog repellent spray. Don't use too much or you will smell it an stay away.

Spread aluminum foil on the couch, they hate the sound, don't tell my wife.
Re: Best way to keep dogs off couch?
Yea aluminum foil is another one that my Mom used to use.
I will try some of these techniques and see how it works.
Thanks

Crate training for when you're not home. The dog is only going to sleep when you're away so a crate works fine - not more then ......hours.( I use 4 hours as my limit.)

Keep them outside in a kennel where hunting dogs belong, so says my wife. I obey her.

You could always try to buy them their own chair

Re: Best way to keep dogs off couch?
I may have a quick and easy solution to your problem. I had a dog that was determined to sleep on the couch when I wasn’t home. I never allowed him up there when I was at home, but he decided he was going to get up there anyway as soon as I left. I tried for a couple of months to keep him off, but nothing seemed to work. Then, I found this Innotek Pet Barrier (I had an older model):

I put the transmitter on the couch, and the collar on the dog, and went to work as usual. When I got home, I could tell he hadn’t been on the couch. When I started to walk over to the couch to remove the transmitter, he gave me a look that said, “I wouldn’t go over there if I were you!”
I’m not sure how long it took to completely break him of the habit because after the first day, he never got back up there. I kept putting the collar on him for about 2 weeks. I’m not sure if he ever tested the couch again after that first day, but it did cure him of wanting to get up there.

I lost that war a long time ago.... Good luck to you....
Re: Best way to keep dogs off couch?
Yes, the mouse trap was a joke. I guess sarcasm is hard to portray with words. The tin foil has worked for my folks.
Re: Best way to keep dogs off couch?
I have a friend that used tin foil and after a couple days of that the dog doesn't even come close to the couch now
Re: Best way to keep dogs off couch?
I have a couch with leather along the bottom. It helped to keep her off of the couch.
She would just sit on the floor next to the couch....
and chew on the leather.
