Devil Pigeon?

Post by jetto » Thu Jul 09, 2009 11:51 am

We've had pigeons for like 6 or 7 years now and I've never had this issue before. We have a young bird- I'm not sure if it's male or female. It was born in our coop several months ago.

It has become extremely territorial of the top shelf of a perch we have in the coop. We have regular V type perches and then also used some old shelving to give them more places to hang out. Well this young bird has taken over the entire top shelf- about 4' worth. I used to see 4 or 5 birds on that shelf and now whenever another bird tries to perch there he chases them off. He was born on the floor in the corner near this shelf and I assume it's his mother that has laid another pair of eggs down there. At first we thought he maybe was the mate and was running the other birds away from the nest but twice now I've seen him run HER off when she's tried to come back to her eggs!

And he makes the most awful screeching sound- one I've never heard come from a pigeon before! Kind of sounds like he's possessed....
The sound was our first indication that something was terribly wrong in the pigeon coop! LOL!

So I've already pretty much decided he's going to part of the next long-distance from home training session unless he really ticks me off then he'll be gone sooner....But anyone ever had this issue before? I've never had pigeon problems! All of our birds even when introducing new ones have gotten along. Now our quail are a whole nother story but the pigeons up until now have always behaved themselves. And all of the other birds are getting along fine except for this one young bird. I even saw him run his sibling off today- we band them different colors so I knew it was his brother or sister he ran off the shelf today. Kristi

Sounds to me like it's time to shoot a bird over your dog and let them retreive it...

That option is being discussed! LOL! I haven't had pigeon pie since I was a kid but it may happen again! Kristi

The pecking order is alive and well in my coop. I use the one most pecked at first and work down through the order as time goes on. :)

I have some like this, you will see it in certain racing pigeons and they will even kill each other here. I have to be carfull when putting birds in different lofts.

Thanks! It's not a pecking order thing that I can see- it's just this one particular bird. I've never seen the others even get twirked at each other. If I used up the birds this one is chasing I'd only have him left, lol....Guess he is first out of the coop for training this weekend! I even walking into the coop yesterday to see if he'd get stupid with me but he acted normal with me- but as soon as I stepped back out and stood and watched- any bird that got on his shelf got run off. I should buy him a "doesn't play well with others" shirt I guess! Kristi

Had one that would beat up his daddy: first to sit on his parents' eggs, then to mate with his mother. He's gone.

We've the usual territorial squabbles that go with loft life, but really disruptive birds are shot.
If you think I'm wrong, you might be right.
