What's the largest vet bill you ever had to pay?

Post by GSP 4 me » Tue Aug 04, 2009 6:49 pm

Our largest one time vet visit bill thus far: Around $680 for a barium study, overnight visit, and blood work.

I'm sure this amount above is small compared to the other posts that will follow.

$7000.00 Yes the dot is in the right spot. And it was not my dog! It was Gent who is owned By Matt lee. We had him out on the field trial circuit last year and was hit by a car and almost died. If not for George Tracy getting him to Cornell Univ hospital... thus the large bill. Since he was under our care and control I did for him what I would do for my own dog. He has made full recovery and is training as we speak so money well spent.

Scott,

Ya got me beat by a little under a $1000.00. A little over a year ago my stud dog was coming through the doggy door into the kennel run. Either Scarlett or Windy T-boned him and I heard him scream. He seemed OK at the time but he couldn't walk the next day. His rear end was collapsing. I took him to the vet. He had two herniated discs in his neck. Mylegram, surgery, physical therapy in the pool on a treadmill, etc. Total was over $6000.00.

You guys are making me feel better. Just taking my ES Brownie tomorrow to have the stitches removed and finish up a $1200 bill that came in pieces from three vets (emergency out of town vet, out of town vet, in town vet) to have 12" of his small intestine removed and everything stitched up after he ate some kind of dang cat toy (not from me, we don't have cats) that included a piece of velcro. You can imagine the damage done.

I don't feel so bad now either. I had an Irish Setter about 12 years ago who got psuedo parvo as a pup and spent a week in the vet hospital with and IV and fluids and it cost me a little over $500. Stunted his growth a little but he went on to be a great bird hunter for me.

A long time ago I bought a very well bred elhew male that was started but when I got him he would only hunt part time. I just could'nt figuer out why he hunted good one day but didn't hunt good the other. After trying everything else I could think of I ended up checking his teeth. They were'nt bad but they were'nt good and I had them cleaned and it costed me $250 plus I ended up culling the dog weeks later.

Close to 3K for a snakebite. 2 nights in the ER, lots of pain meds, 2 vials of antivenin and a plasma transfusion - but the dog DID survive, so it was worth it.

$5000 to put the pelvis back together. Was smashed into 5 pieces by a car. Used a steel plate, 13 screws, foot of wire, and a tube of super glue. But the dog still runs and hunts and you can't tell it happened unless you were really looking for it.

I don't feel so bad now. I spent around $800 at the ER having my old boy diagnosed with splenic cancer, and then having him put down.

doc dr,

In this country the question is always asked: How much is enough?

If I needed a vet and you lived near me, you would definitely get my business. On behalf of myself & other forum members ... thanks for all of the free consultations!

My dog spent almost an entire month in Intensive Care unit at an emergency vet, that was not cheap. Plus he had every test under the sun ran on him and all came back negative. We spend around 6k in that month, I think that counts since is was all for the same reason.

The worst part is that we never nailed down what the problem was, he has had one lapse since then. But it was much more minor. We are 7 months without incident so we are very happy.

Wow. The worst vet bill I remember having to pay is $99 - and that's because it was a weekend visit at the Emergency Vet Clinic and not my normal vet's office. I've been lucky with a healthy dog I suppose.

I had to get my Vet out of church on a Sunday morning to do a c-section. He kept the bitch and pups over night and my bill was just under $500.

That included the discount for getting him out of church :D

Serverl years ago we had one Lab that got into the trash, $600 surgery to remove blockage. Two weeks later the cat jumped off of a chair and accidentally landed on the dog when the dog jumped up it broke the cat's jaw, $400 surgery. Four weeks later the other Lab was hit by a car, $2,000 hip replacement.

I think it was almost $6000 for four day stay in an emergency clinic with 24 hour care for what turned out to be bacterial pneumonia in an 11 yr old dog. They told me at checkout the bill was $4K, I said I put down a $2K deposit on Monday, so it's only another $2K, right?

Wrong. Reason: Wife's dog. There was no saying no. My wife had the dog before she had me, and would have me put down before the dog, if it came to that. The dog lived another 2 years before we lost her.

But the winner is some people we know who had a dog that got in an argument with a black bear and lost. The surgery cost them $17,000. Yep, that's seventeen thousand dollars. No joke. The dog is fully recovered.

The largest vet bill was $6,000.00 for a cruciate ligament repair on my GSP, but the hardest bill to pay was about 20 years ago.
I had my old black lab die during duck hunting season and a friend of mine offered to let me use his golden for the weekend. I had always teased him about goldens being too soft to hunt in our cold waters of late September and since he was going moose hunting for the weekend he wanted me to take his dog to prove a point.
Unfortunately, the dog fell off the front of the boat and was hit by the 40 HP prop. Three broken ribs and a punctured lung. Vet cost $950.00 when the dollar was worth something.
I remember thinking before taking the dog for the weekend....never borrow a mans wife or his dog. I tried the dog part and that sure turned out bad....so since my wife and I have been married 43 years I think I will pass on trying the wife part

Wow alaskantruck we had a TPLO done on our lab about 10 years ago and it was around $3,300.00 if I remember correctly. Plus the travel to Denver where we had it done and motel for 2-3 nights.

Yeah, I think the only thing potentially worse than losing my own dog is losing someone else's dog on my watch.

A friend of ours had something similar happen. They were dogsitting another friend's dog. They live next to a lot of land and had a habit of taking long walks with several dogs. So, one day, they head out with probably 6-8 dogs. The dogs knew the drill, never ran away, and always managed to turn up when the walk was over.
They had never had a dog snakebit out there before, so of course, the first one it happens to was their friend's dog. And it was bitten right on the neck, so it didn't stand a chance. To make matters worse, the owner was one of the sweetest old ladies you've ever met.

Imagine making that phone call.

$3000 dollars to have a beanie baby removed from the intestinal track of a 2 yr old dog. Three years later the sucker ate what appeared to be a sock.

$6000 to put my DC boy's elbow back together. 2 plates and 13 screws. That was the first time he broke it. The second time was another 1000 and the third time was $1500. Apparently he had stress fractured the elbow to begin with somewhere around April 2005 when he ran in the 2005 AKC Pointing Dog National Championship, making the callbacks. He came into his call back limping... and we weren't aware of why. We radiographed him 3 ways from Sunday, Took him 2000 miles to a specialist in TX who still couldn 't see a problem to diagnose the original intermittant lameness. Came home from TX and July 4th he jumped over the side of Brian's truck and shattered...and I mean GRENADED his elbow.

The orthopod put Humpty Dumpty back together again and he stayed sound enough to finish his DC title. He later got gone on some deer and came home three legged, breaking the same leg, same elbow, different location. Healed him up from that and all was well. Til last fall....I took him out for a training run and on ce again he gave me the slip, chasing down deer. he once again came in 3 legged.....SAME "bleep" ELBOW, different place around the plates. My vet in WV is a bone guy....refused to amputate the leg and he put Humpty Dumpty back together a 3rd and final time. No more running or hunting for Dutch. He is offically retired from everything....I'm outta $$$$.

Dexter Dog:
Cruciate ligiment first side &1,200.00.
9 months later, Cruciate Ligimanet, second side $1,400.00.
ended up dying from cushings disease at age 11. That was mostly testing cost, I miss him, pain in the A#$$ but had so much desire, drive and personality and just a sweet as could be. He was a $65 pound brit. In good shape. Well, you know what I mean.
Stella Bella:
Open stomach to retrieve a needle before it made it in the intestines, $900.
Stella will end up probablly with some kind of surgery for her hips, Displaysia and I can here them clicking when she runs on occasion. Geesh!

These two started out with as the least expensive but do to their antics and genetic and general physiology, end up being the most expensive. Dexter ate ;staples that passed on its own, ate abottle of advil that he some how got out of my glove compartment. I forget all the stuff, seemed like once every 3 motnhs there was something.
The best part of training is seeing the light come on in your little prot'eg'e.

About five hundred, to bring a near dead dog back to life. She had ate some kind of poison something or other. She was in ICU (or the dog equivalent) for several days. Vet said thirty minutes more to get her in, and she woulda been gone. She was 15 at the time, and lived to be 17 years old. "bleep" fine dog.
The reason a dog has so many friends, is because he wags his tail instead of his tongue.

About ten years ago, we had a young G. Shepherd that got hit and broke his front leg . A screw was needed, X-rays, etc. He lived almost 9 1/2 years more, developed arthritis of course. Bill was about $320 for repair.
