More wild bird training pics

Post by tommyboy72 » Wed Aug 12, 2009 9:58 pm

Finally got a chance to run the dogs on some more wild birds today. It cooled down to about 90 from the 103 that it has been running around here. I figured I would get the dogs out and run them for a short time.

Reno my setter on some birds that were actually perched in a cactus tree

Thanks I appreciate it. I was kind of partial to the pic of my male where you can just see his head through the flowers and between the log.

Thanks I appreciate it. I wish more people would post pics of their training or just fun runs on here.

Fairly decent. Not as good as I would expect them to look considering that we have had some really good rainfall this year, the best in 2 years but you have to consider that I am working dogs on blue quail which break covey by mid morning and don't covey back up until about dark but I always find birds. I have not been able to get out until late afternoon usually so when I get out early in the morning I will be able to let you know more. I have been seeing adult bobwhite quail which is unusual so I am really excited about that. I expect a really good year here if we can get some snow and cold weather which will cause the blues to covey up a bit more instead of staying so spread out.

I have hunted the Blues out around Guymon and they can be challenging to say the least, here in central OK I have been hearing more birds than last year, I am cautiously optimistic.

I am also pretty optimistic but I am going to wait until we get some snow or cold weather to make sure. Seems like the blues form bigger coveys when it gets colder other than that they stay pretty spread out over a huge area in smaller coveys.

Out around where I live and I am sure Cooper will attest to this good quail and pheasant numbers are the only advantage of living here. I live way out in the middle of nowhere. The nearest city has about 10,000 people and a few businesses, Super Wal Mart being one of them but to do any serious shopping you have to drive 100 miles south to Amarillo, 300 miles east to Oklahoma City, 350 miles west to Albuquerque, 350 miles Northwest to Denver or about 300 miles Northeast to Wichita. I guess Enid is a bit bigger with 50,000 people but it is still about 3-3 1/2 hours away. There are very few places to deer hunt here because of all the privately owned land and the refusal of the landowners to allow turkey and deer hunting almost to the point that it is not worth even asking. So bird hunting is my life pretty much. :)
