People who are allergic to dogs.....
People who are allergic to dogs.....
My daughter's fiance is allergic to dogs. They both absolutely love dogs. Her boyfriend can't leave my dogs alone when he's here....loves to play with them, etc. and then he has to take some allergy medication and go lay down for a while (crazy kid!!). My daughter really wants one of my Springers when I have pups again, but I don't think it's a good idea. Is there a shot people can take who are allergic to dogs? I know they have shots for people who are allergic to pollens, etc. We have a friend who takes a shot every 3 months and he says it works great for him.

Yes, There are shots available for dog & cat allergies. The pathway of diagnosis & treatment is nearly always the same. See an allergist. After an examination & discussion they will normally want to test for many possible allergies. Treatment options will be offered, along with the known statistical chances for success. For some individuals shots have a semi-permanent positive effect. However in others Injections may fail to reduce reactions & the accompanying symptoms.

If medically necessary they are typically covered by insurance.
p.s. With the usual deductibles & co-payments.

Re: People who are allergic to dogs.....
I'm in Canada so I don't know how much I can help but yes up here they are covered by insurance... Basically just go to an allergy specialist as has already been discussed and go from there..
There will definatly be different results for different people but in my case they definatly do work... I've been taking them for almost a year... if you don't have someone to give you the needles then they would be a pain in the bum.. luckily my mom is a nurse so i'd buy the needles and travel the 5 minutes to the folks house for the shots....
they are very slow going as far as feeling benefits... they say you will notice the best benefit after 1 year of shots....
my parents bought a 2 year old springer when i was about 2 weeks into my needles and at first i could tolerate the dog for about 10 minutes when i visited now i can be up there all day and the dog doesn't bother me that much.. probably a lot to do with being around the same dog but the allergy shots have helped for sure...
they will have minimal effect on allergic hives but will help other symptoms including allergic asthma...

Rather than have a detailed medical discussion about statements like this on a gundog forum site I'd rather just have the reader know treatments, including injections of small amounts of allergens are available and helpful to some. I suggest if Turk wants to learn more he should read through authoritative medical sources on the internet or consult directly with a physician.10r wrote:they will have minimal effect on allergic hives but will help other symptoms including allergic asthma...

WOW.... i realize it's a gundog forum... the man asked a question and I answered as best as I knew how.... i'm quite sure there are not gonna be any "detailed medical discussions" about allergies on this site.... i'm also quite sure the one line sentence you quoted does not constitute a detailed medical discussion either.... just made a general post to try and help the guy.. yes he's free to read whatever research he wants.. he came here to ask a question and I answered it... thanks for making newer members or people that don't post much think twice before they do..I know I will...BigShooter wrote:Rather than have a detailed medical discussion about statements like this on a gundog forum site I'd rather just have the reader know treatments, including injections of small amounts of allergens are available and helpful to some. Well........hmmmmm. I'm not quite sure how to respond to you on this, other than that whenever a man is told what he "should" do it usually doesn't set very well. My wife and I have had this discussion many times. The word "should" implies that a person is not intelligent enough to figure anything out on their own.
In regards to this being a gundog forum, that is absolutely correct but in my home our gundogs are part of the family.... They are not just a tool to use when hunting season opens. Thus, I felt my question on this forum was appropriate. I didn't think my question fit under "Health and Nutrition" as that pertains to a dog's health, so I posted it under General Chat. Perhaps a topic such as "Living With Our Gundogs" would be useful. ????

10r,
The statement you made is incomplete & inaccurate.
Turk,
This was the question asked:
As you pointed out you would have worded a statement like the one I made differently. Other than saying shots are available, I still believe more authoritative medical sources regarding additional information about such things as histamine, the serum released from mast cells (hives), asthma & how they may be affected by various treatment options is better left to internet research or to a qualified physician.

10r, FWIW, I thought your post was on topic and informative. IMO, you simply answered a question from your experience.10r wrote:WOW.... i realize it's a gundog forum... the man asked a question and I answered as best as I knew how.... i'm quite sure there are not gonna be any "detailed medical discussions" about allergies on this site.... i'm also quite sure the one line sentence you quoted does not constitute a detailed medical discussion either.... just made a general post to try and help the guy.. yes he's free to read whatever research he wants.. he came here to ask a question and I answered it... thanks for making newer members or people that don't post much think twice before they do..I know I will...BigShooter wrote:Rather than have a detailed medical discussion about statements like this on a gundog forum site I'd rather just have the reader know treatments, including injections of small amounts of allergens are available and helpful to some. If you think you can or if you think you can't, you are right either way

thanks Charlie.....
big shooter.. how is my comment incomplete???? from the research i've done the shots seem to have shown by most accounts to have no notable effect on hives.. if you have other research regarding the opposite i'd love to read it as that is one of my symptoms.... yes you are right, the question is better answered by a qualified physician....... turk has no doubt advised his son in law to do the same but he thought he may be able to come on a forum that is known to have good info made available by good dog loving people as some may have first hand experience....
you are correct, his question should be answered by a qualified physician but thats what these forums are for.. in any case if every question we had should only be answered by experts then shouldn't the only people offering advise on dogs and training problems on this forum be professional trainers????? i'm sure there are back yard guys that could answer a question just as good as a pro trainer could... just sayin'
Re: People who are allergic to dogs.....
Generally speaking, if a person is that allergic to dogs, he will more than likely be allergic to pollen as well.
Insurance, in many cases, will cover some of the cost for getting shots. They do run in a series, most taking
about three years to build up the immune system. So, if he decides to have the shots, be prepared to take them
for at least three years.
Do they help, yes. I have three britts that live with me in my house and I am doing fine. And yes, my insurance
did cover all but the co-pay.
