A few pics of my pup

Post by Dave C » Sat Aug 22, 2009 12:56 pm

Here are a few pics of Fern, she has just gone 5 months now and coming along nicely.

Fern scenting where rabbits were sat.

Where did they all go

She loves jumping through the long grass

She found a hidden Pheasant wing in the nettles

She is hitting cover hard when hunting and retrieving Pheasant wings and dummies very well.
Although i have had a Lab before the GWP seem to suit my hunting better but seeing both parents of this bitch i was very impressed, they were both hard hunting athletic machines and i hope she turns out the same, So fingers crossed in a few months i could end up with a handy hunting partner.

Best of luck with her.

Dave, thanks for the pics. Looks like she has plenty of prey drive, which IMO, is the main ingrdient. Good luck!!!!

Good looking pup. Reminds me of mine when his was younger except mine has a white patch and isn't full lab. Looks like he's full of energy. Oh man oh man, my dog was a feisty one at that age! Tested me at every turn.

Yeh she has a lot of prey drive, which she will need as she will be worked twice a week all year round.

Dave,

She is a good looking pup!

I am posting on this thread so as to not hijack the other hunting thread.

She looks just like the "field" Labs that we have in S. Carolina. Very much working dogs and they look athletic. I have some friends who breed "English" Labs for show. I hate to say it but they are a sad sight. They don't look athletic looking and remind me of little piggies who wouldn't be able to swim if their lives depended upon it.

Dave unfortunately some breeders have the misconception that a Labrador must have these false traits......the head of a rottweiler, the legs of a dachshund, the tail of an otter, and the spine of a Frenchman   .

Pam, Casper, thanks for posting.
You are both dead right and hear in the UK no real hunting person would ever consider a dog with a Show pedigree.
Things have got so bad with the show lines that the kennel club are currently reviewing the breed standard and its about time too, as they have become very embarrassing

As for the working strains there is almost 2 types now, you have again a very heavy thick docile type which train very easy and is ideal for the driven shooters that only work there dogs about 6 times a year sitting on a peg (although these types can make good wild fowling dogs) they are better than show types, but i am not a big fan.
And then there is the finer boned fitter more athletic type of Lab, which are very much a handful and harder to train, which puts alot of the traditional shooting people off, these are the lines i got mine from, both her parents are hard hunting machines which is what she will need as i hunt every week normally twice a week, all year round.

I have mainly hunted with GWP's in the past but after seeing Fern's parents i was very impressed, so fingers crossed.

Good looking pup! Sounds like she'll have a very full, fun filled life! She reminds me of our "pointing" lab that passed away almost 4 years ago. She was only about 55 LBS and a lot of people would comment on how small she was but she could sure out last their big dogs :) I wish I had pics of her to post.

Yeh i have seen a few Pointing Labs on the net, but we dont get them in the UK (mores the pity), they look my kind of Lab, nice and athletic.
Are they pure bred or do they have some pointer in them ?

Those last four photos show what it is all about. Those are true blue, focused hard chargers, That is what I like to see in a true hunting dog.
Good stuff. Your pup has the same eyes, It surely is in her.
