Aluminum Dog Box

Post by jkoehler » Fri Sep 11, 2009 8:02 am

Guys or gals that have the aluminum dog boxes, are you happy with them? What makes them better than a simple plywood box? I am debating whether or not I should get one or not?

Durability -- I have two trucks and 2 Owens Dog Boxes --- wood rots, don't have to worry about that with a aluminum dog box.

Sure cost for wooden box is cheaper than a aluminum dog box upfront --- but eventually you'll need to do repair work no matter how much you water proof which keeps costing you $$ in the long run-- while I don't have that issue with aluminum dog boxes and they outlast all the wooden boxes you might go through.

If I went the wood route, I would have it LineX.

weight also --- it is easy to throw a 2 dog aluminum box in the back of the truck by myself without throwing out my back.

I've had both. Several years ago I asked myself the same exact question - I mean, it's a dog box, it just needs to hold dogs...so I built a pretty trick, durable 3 hole wooden box. It was all I could do to lift the dang thing in and out of the truck it was so heavy, the front was 3/4" plywood and those dogs still managed to mangle it up chewing and scratching at it. So I swapped out to aluminum boxes - much lighter, extremely durable, typically more $$. I bought a 4 hole Creative Supply box a few years ago that IMO was ridiculously expensive and really not that well done - rivots have been popping out, the top is lifting off, the key locks freeze in the winter to where I can't open the doors. I just installed 6 boxes in my horse trailer that I had custom made by a local craftsman, very well done, all 6 boxes total still cost me significantly less than the single 4 hole box from Creative Supply. Very well done, love 'em.

So, long story short, I'd go for aluminum crafted by someone locally if you can find such a person.

Here's the ones I just had made - $275 per box.

I just went through this arguement last year. I ended up buying a Owens. The one good thing for me was that the factory for Owens is just an hour away from me. I just bought it through a dealer and picked it up. They only build them when they are ordered. I am getting ready to order another. Very happy with my box.

I have one of these in 3 dog and am very happy with it. Feel much better about the dogs riding in there than pretty much any other option. Doesn't get cold enough here for locks to freeze like is does where Doug is. It is light enough my wife can help me get in/out of the truck. The top storage is great, don't think you can appreciate it until you have it. Nice to be able to load up guns and gear, lock it and not have to worry about weather when traveling and still have room for people in the cab. Whatever you do if you have 2 dogs I'd get the 3 dog box. Take a buddy with you and his dog, easy place to load launchers into.

I would like deeper top storage than it has to be able to put launchers up top and have more room.

Have a two hole box made by Creative Sports Supply and, actually, have been pretty satisfied with it. Was thinking about upgrading to their Pro Series 101 (3 hole). Certainly would appreciate any suggestions. I have also done business with Jones Trailer. Make a good product but also $$$$$. Doug, your box's look great..I'm looking for something for the back of full size pick up. Hunt from Texas to South Dakota so need some good insulation and ventilation. Thanks

Has anyone with a white dog had him "change color" after a bit of time in aluminum boxes? I'm told the metal actually rubs off and your white dog goes gray. Anyone have experience?

I have been looking at Bitter Creek boxes. Anyone have one of these?

Yes I have a buddy with Yellow Labs and they both get discolored from the direct contact with the aluminum.

Try Premier Aluminum in Okla, they made this trailer for me to my specs. They also make nice dog boxes, probably can make about anything you want.

That's the site I am having problems with. Every time I try my Anti-Virus says it detects a Trojan horse. Can you access the site with no problem?
