What a show!
Just returned from a quail hunt on a southern USA plantation. EPs, 2 at a time pointing coveys, shooters dismounting 2 at a time to shoot. Pointers were steady to wing, shot, fall, and retrreive, as "wagon dogs" (labs/springers/cockers) leapt off at command and were handled through mostly blind retreives back to the wagon or dog handler. These pointers stood like statues, except for their huge flaring nostrils! (what's the term, "choke-barreled" )
Anyone here an advocate of or lucky enough to use pointers that find birds, and retrirvers to deliver them? It was beautiful, but can't imagine often practical unless you are Ted Turner.
Anyone here have pointers trained NOT to retrieve?
Re: Anyone here have pointers trained NOT to retrieve?
You dont need to be Ted Turner to afford it. You only need to have the patience and know how to work with the two dogs from the two entirely different ends of the spectrum. I really dont see anything wrong with it, essentially your only playing of the strength of each breed, good idea really. I personally like one dog that can point and retrieve but thats me. Of course that pointing dog wont retrieve as well as a retriever even after being FF'd. On the other hand a retriever just aint gonna "point" like a pointing dog either!
