feeding dogs while on the road

Post by luke0927 » Wed Nov 25, 2009 3:42 pm

when do you like to feed your dogs when going on a road trip? I'll be leaving about lunch tomorrow to head to KS about 17 hrs...I normally feed in the evening but was thinking of feeding early morning that way they should be able to get by on just water and maybe small amount late the evening if they don't it all in the morning....as long as i give them time to go to the bathroom I think it should be fine?

I would feed at the end of each traveling day....that way they wont get upset stomachs while moving.

Just what I did.

A one day fast wont hurt them either. Might make them eat good when you get where your going.

I just returned from Kansas. It's a 2 day trip each way for me. On the road I feed a reduced ration, about 75% of the regular ration, at the end of each traveling day. They get aired out and watered at each fuel stop. This has been working just fine for me.

Planned on letting them out when we stop for fuel but I'll be driving straight through so i'll probalby just feed them a smaller amount when we stop in the evening. Then feed them good when we get there in the morning.

Heading to AZ Sunday......12 hours. Feeding late in the day has always worked.

If you don,t feed them in the morning usually, i would not start now. Just feed them at night like always.Good luck with the hunting.

Stick to their routine, feed as close to the time of day that you normally do. I also bring water from home.

Agree with the above. Don't change their routine. Don't overlook the importance of Big Dave's comment about water. Very important. Either bring it from home or give bottled water.
