When does your upland season end?

Post by briarpatch » Tue Dec 08, 2009 7:45 pm

Where is everyone from, When does your upland season end? what birds can be found in your state?

the reason i am asking is in NJ the season runs to feb 15th, but the state quits releasing birds the end of Dec. which basically means the end of the season is the end of Dec. as wild birds are such a rarity anymore in this state. So our upland season is rapidly heading to an end..

thinking of perhaps extending the season a bit perhaps after the new year with a small trip if things go well, so,

Where is everyone from, When does your upland season end? what birds can be found in your state? are they wild birds or released by the state?

I'm from PA and we have a late season as well. Released pheasants (Holiday hens) in gamelands as well as a pretty good grouse hunting! #s are up this year IMO! Just do you research looking for released birds!!

Im over in Dover De, our preserve season runs until March 31st.

Can chase what few quail we have in Maryland until late January.

Depends on the bird.
Grouse at year's end.
Chuckar goes through Feb.
Preserve about April 1.

Hello,

Due to someone's thrown out beer bottle, our season has ended early (5 stiches in Sophie's paw). Season ends here on Dec 20. Hope to find a hunt club to get in some more days.

Doesn't that make you sick? I've had dogs that couldn't make it through a single year without getting a major cut on their paw.

In Utah as 3Britts pointed out we have till mid Feb to chase Chukar and Huns.

Throughout the year we have the chance to hunt Ptarmigan, Blue & Forrest Grouse, Huns, Chukar, Sharptail, Sagegrouse, Pheasant, and 2 species of quail.

This year I have take all but Ptarmigan (took one last year), Huns (I am going after then on Sat), and quail (might take a trip down south after them).

Ruff season ends Dec. 31, right now we are in the middle of a storm, may get up to 14" or as little as 3". Weather people are idiots. We already have the 3" now. So if we get over 14" makes it tough going but strap on the shoes and go. I love this time of year to hunt.

In Illinois it is Jan. 8 for the northern part of the state and a week later for the southern part. Reserves are open until March 31.

In Idaho we have pheasant; huns; chukars; blue, ruffed, spruce, sharptail and sage grouse; and California and bobwhite quail. We also have limited populations of gambels and mountain quail but no season for them. The sage grouse season ends in late Sept. or early Oct., Sharptail ends in the end of October. Pheasants end at the end of November in the eastern part of the state and end of December in the rest of the state. Forest grouse (Blues, ruffs and spruce) end at the end of December and chukars and huns end at the end of January.

Preserve season goes until 31 March. The last part of the season is the best around here because the deer hunters are no longer running there dogs all over the place.
I'd rather live on the side of a mountain, than wander through canyons of concrete and steel.

U.P. of Michigan.

My season starts July 15th when dogs are allowed to run in the woods. I use it as training time on wild birds until the ruffed grouse season opens on September 15th until deer season opens on November 15th. Woodcock are mixed in from the third weekend in September to the first weekend in November. Occasionally, I head to the Dakotas for week on pheasants around the end of October.

Grouse season re-opens December 1st but the snow usually limits hunting. I managed to get 1 weekend in and it is usually awesome...then my season ends.

This year I am heading to Georgia in February for a quail hunt and if it is fun, it may become an annual trip and a break from all the snow.

Come mid-April I hit the woods again to conduct woodcock banding studies and that runs til about Memorial Day weekend.

Living the dream with all the wild birds contacts for the pups.
