Dog weights, how much does your dog weigh?

Post by labman21 » Wed Dec 23, 2009 2:10 pm

Hello everybody I am interested in peoples dog's weights across the country/world. Whatever, so please post with your dog(s) weight(s), where you live and your breed of dog. I would like to see how location effects the size of dogs all over the world. As you can see my dogs are larger because we live up in Montana. Dogs typically will be bred according to their environment, I think. And now I realize that there are so many other variables that can affect this, thanks
Thanks for participation :)

Drake,2.5, yellow lab, 88.2 lbs, Helena,Mt
Ruger,1.5,Black lab/Flat coated Retriever,94 lbs, Helena,Mt

And yes I know my dogs are heavy, but it's all muscle they are healthy :D

There are so many variables that affect dog weight, that a proper study that eliminates these variables is impossible. A trustworthy scientific study has to be able to eliminate the variables in the population used and have a control group. A study can show anything you want without these factors. That's why so many "reliable studies" on the net are invalid.
One of my setters is 27 pounds, not because she was born in Ontario but because she is a runt.. Another setter is 35 pounds. Not because she was born in Ontario, but because she comes a " small setter' breeding line. We breed big ones up here too. :)

This might be an interesting 50 year study if the breeding were all random with other dogs born in your same area. But with the movement that takes place today I don't think there is any possibility that dogs in one area are bigger than the same dogs in some other area. At least not because of the environment. I have a Brit from Michigan at 35 lbs but would weigh more if I let her eat. A male from Ohio at 35 lbs that needs coaxing to eat enough to get over 32. And one of their pups that is still under two at 44 and still maturing. Oh he is from IL.

Yeah, with GSP's and DK's many breeders breed for much different sized dogs, I dont think it has as much to do with location but what the different breeder's prefer in size or type of GSP (if you will)
the show dogs tend to be larger and also the DK's tend to be even larger yet than the show dogs,(their standard is even larger than the US) then say the FT type dogs tend to be smaller, but it still appears for the most part more of a preference thing with individual breeders as to size..

but as to your question

Male GSP out of Kansas 65 lbs

female GSP out of DK direct german imports 70 lbs pure muscle no fat

english bulldog 65 lbs

you may want to limit your question to more of a breed specific crowd may be more useful. With all the breeds on here you'll get a heck of a lot of different answers

My female Sadie weighs 32 lbs and my male Rooke weighs 57 lbs. They are both pointers that are full siblings, the female was born in June of 2006 and the male was born in Jan. 2007. Sadie was one of the biggest pups in the litter at 8 weeks but just didn't grow as big as Rooke did, they were both fed and raised the exact same way but for what ever reason Sadie just didn't grow as much. I know some of it has to do with the male/female difference though.

Weimaraners:

1 male 69lbs
1 male 60lbs
1 female 54lbs
1 female 52lbs
1 female 49lbs
1 female 44lbs

My vet has a chart in his office of various breeds and what they 'should' weigh. Under Weimaraner, it says "70-120lbs" I crossed it out and wrote in "50-75"

labman21,

Are you wondering if people in a particular area of the country like different traits in certain breeds? If so, that may be true. When I lived in Colorado and hunted waterfowl on cold, icy, fast moving rivers, it was nice to have a bigger lab for retrieving all day. Now that I am hunting the prairies more often, a small fast moving upland lab would be my choice. IMO a 100+ pound lab just doesn't cover the ground as well as a 55-60er does. Anyway, here is what I have here in Kansas:

GSP -42#
GSP -40#
GSP -51#
Setter -57#
Setter -30# (@ 6months)

I took my 5 yr old Pointer (Miller x Whippoorwills Rebel breeding) in to the vet for a urinary tract infection. I asked the vet to weigh him 3 times cause I couldn't believe he weighed 67.5 lbs in condition. I would have bet he didn't weigh 50, and have had other dogs that appeared much larger that only weighed 63.
