Puppy Names

Post by BigBoyTank » Thu Jan 07, 2010 2:07 pm

Picking up my new Britt (Male) next Sunday and we're stumped on names. I named my other male Tank, which I like but the wife does not. She would like to get me away from names such as gunner and other typical hunting dog names. She has suggested Cooper, which will be COOP in my world but I was hoping for some suggestions. Thanks in advance.

I haven't asked teh breeder about the naming requirements, but I'm sure there are some.

I name my dogs after card games. I couldn't play a hand at poker but I like the names it produces. My next male will be called Grousestales Texas holdem. Call name will be Tex.

Our house is a Penn State house so the dog's names reflect that. We have Tanner's Nittany Pride and he goes by Nittany and our other dog is named Tanner's Nittany Linebacker Blitz and he goes by Blitz. You could try to pick a name that reflects on your interests.

You could name him after your wife. Than you'd have an outlet when "#he" is getting on your nerves. And, after all, how could she object to such an honor?

Knew a guy with a setter named "Kat" obviously it's short for a nice girl name but in the field it always made me smile to here what sounds like "Cat"
Frankly I let names pick me. One will stick and be to hard to ignore. Don't know why, but it does. Hardest one I had was a pup named Hudson. Took forever for a name to stick, but he was bright white and Hudson was an early acrtic explorer.. and eventually it stuck. Wanted to name him "Chilly" but no one else in the family would use it so it didn't stick. In general my dogs have names you'd think of as people names, and my kids have the more unusual names. oh well.

Not yet, but he's out of Quail Hollow Kennel if that helps.

I do think we are going to go with Coop though.

We have an australian shepperd named D.O.G. If you say it fast it sounds like deeogee or kinda italian. It was funny when I took her to the vet and the vet said thats a beautiful name how do you spell it. BTW we also have a cat named ceeaty or C.A.T. I let my kids name my GSP my son thought "PULL" was cool because thats what you say when your ready to shoot when shooting clays. Now we can say "pull" and hopefully up pops a rooster.

Other names we have had for dogs in the past:
Whiskey
Whiley
Foxy
Buddy
Cinamon
Snicklefritz (snicks)
booger
maximus (max)
Big Guy
Tuck
Chazz

You want to pick a name that's short and easy to pronounce. One or two syllables, distinct, so that the dog knows it's his name and can be used to call him at a distance in the field.

Here are my male dogs names:

Rusty
Trip
Scout
Buddy
Spot

Quail Hollow's Flew the Coop

If you stick with Coop or Cooper, I was also thinking of say one of Gary Cooper's Westerns, like Quail Hollow's High Noon. Kind of an inside thing I guess, but the call name still makes sense.

Dog names are tough sometimes. Right now I have Ben, Roxxi, Ace, Abe, Star, Sis, Rose. I always try to have something to do with the papered name. Ben(Nella Running Tab) Running Tab=lots of Benjamins. Roxxi(Nella Roxxi Star), Abe(Nella Ulterior Motive) my exwife took every penny. Abe Lincoln is on the penny. That one is my favorite.

when we got our dog i wanted to either name him hulkster or dude and the wife shot both of them down and we compromised and settled on hogan which is as close to hulkster as i could get. How about Hollywood or jester from top gun.
