questions bout quail.....

Post by jimbo&rooster » Mon Apr 12, 2010 3:53 pm

I know that we are getting into the nesting season so I have been running my dogs (for exercise) in places where I have never seen birds and in grasslands where I dont really expect to see birds nested, well I got into a covey of birds today in a place ive never seen them. Indiana has no law about running dogs in the off season, but how long should I wait before i get my pup back out into areas where there are birds? Julyish? Also what kind of range does a covey of quail cover? 1/2 mile radius? more?

A limit on the strap is nice, but the kill has nothing to do with tradition.

I was surprised myself. i their were about 10-15 birds near as i could tell, they were on public land spread out over bout an acre of grasslands got up in pairs but were all right there together.

well ive been frequenting the area running dogs for three years and have never seen a bird there so im not gona get too wound up. thats kind of why im curiouse how large of a range that a covey will use. I was just happy to see that after bumping the first pair my pup got down to the business at hand and actually pointed a couple of the other pairs.
