Re: flat coat retriever
A time machine to go to Lord Tweedmouth's kennels, circa 1890?
Why a flatcoat? I think they are beautiful dogs (though some lines have the muzzle of a collie), but it was my impression that most a bred for the show ring.

Re: flat coat retriever
Our old flattie Boomer was by your definition a show dog, but he spent he later years as a working retriever, hauling geese back... don;'t count them out as a nice personal hunting dog!

Re: flat coat retriever
He has done some research and found that they make a great hunting dog. And the size and temperament of the breed is what he is looking for.
Re: flat coat retriever
Be VERY careful. My sister had one, did her research, found a reputable breeder, waited quite a while for a pup....wonderful temperament, passed at 7 yrs old from cancer (was VERY quick.....fine in the morning, took a nap, didn't wake up...had tumor attached to heart wall that burst). I was told that there is such a small gene pool with this breed that cancer is just rampant.

Jason,
Had one of those 20 years ago, alright dog but not much good for hunting,REALLY REALLY good at frisbee,Got her from up on the Mt. Baker Highway near Kendall. My suggestion would follow others ,pretty small gene pool,A bred for pure hunting version of the flatcoats golden cousin would be a carbon copy fit as far as temperment went.I believe there is a flat coat breeder in Agasiz B.C.. In my experiance the darker the color of coat on a golden retriever = a better hunter.

Re: flat coat retriever
I think your friend should consider contacting Mary Wilson. She has bred several generations of Flatcoats for years in Minnesota. I don't think she's planning to have another litter but she could tell you who will be producing a litter and which lines are better gundogs than showdogs. Shoot me a PM if you would like Mary's contact information.
